Pick liberal or conservative depending on what BEST fits your views.

When I saw American power, I mean in terms of the military, economy...etc. The whole shabang, if you will.

My guess on the poll is all the liberals will pretend to be conservatives and vote decreasing. Last time I had a poll somewhat like this, the results were this board was 75% conservative.

Do you mind at least throwing in an independent option? Otherwise I'm just going to screw up your poll.

Would be nice to see other options in the poll to reflect a truer picture of the political environment here in the U.S.

Alas, we're stuck dealing with another black-and-white view.

How about an option for making more enemies than Osama or Saddam were ever capable of recruiting on their own?

I think we're gaining, but we're about at the pinicle, and will very soon start declining. Especially if we keep following many of the failed policys we have been.

I would, I think that some people voted conservative, decreasing even though they are liberal. I dont think that 3x as many conservatives feel that way as opposed to increased. But i could be wrong...

Obviously it's the honor system, but I think the percentages seem to line up with liberals and conservatives. Assuming equal representation in the poll, 77% of P&N posters here are liberal. This, in fact, seems a bit high from what I've observed lately. Maybe 6 months ago, but there have been a lot of new conservative posters here lately.

I take it this means you're going to stick with the absolutist and incomplete poll options?

All I said was to pick the option with BEST describes your views. If that makes me poll "absolutist" and "incomplete", then so be it.

I'm neither liberal or conservative, and I feel we're gaining power, but other nations are gaining power faster.

Seriously, liberal/conservative label just doesn't fit me at all either way. I'm a strong social liberal, and a strong economic conservative. I don't agree with popular views on many things, and I have sort of self-made opinions.

We're losing our focus on science, and don't value education enough. It's going to bite us in the ass later.

Conservative. Power in Decline.

Getting that off my chest, I will explain my reasoning:
While the US is by far the most dominant country on the planet, and will be for the distant future; other countries are growing much faster than the US and are becoming more comfortable taking a stand.

In the days of the cold war, it was taboo to go against the good guys (democratic nations) and for the time period right after this alliance held strong, almost everyone supporting all of the US's decisions. Iraq seems to be the first modern day war where many countries took a stand against the US's decision. Not to get into this debate, it seems like the rest of the world is comfortable in taking a stand against the US, and in turn is making the US's influence less powerful than it once was.

From a purely economic perspective, China and India's GDP is growing at 7-10% and world GDP is growing at a rate of 5%. The US can consistently get 3% or so on the average, the shift is apparent. Also consider the world GDP vs. US GDP in 2005 at $56trillion vs. $12trillion (21% of world economy) ; and in 1980 (real gdp values) at $2trillion vs. $130billion (26% of world economy).

:( This thread reminds me of Isaac Asimov's Foundation.

In Foundation, the Galactic Empire declined even when its own citizens never foresaw its fall. They believed it would exist forever, they were mislead by the false illusions of the warmth of its grand interior and failed to notice the cancer eating away it external borders.

That is what happening with the U.S

Asimov hit the nail on its head, truly great powers are never destroyed by external forces, they instead collapse, thanks to the rot within. Rot which creates apathy towards the exterior and causes it to pine away and then slowly the cancer proceeds within.

Perhaps most Americans here are carried away by the appearance of its miliary prowess. But remember it takes a great civilisation to sustain a greater military and even then a military is not a true indicator of the civilisation's strength.

I feel sad for the U.S, I seriously want her to remain a match for China. I'am a Indian citizen living in India, but I love how the U.S stood for freedom at one point of time, even considering its racial equalities or discriminatories law (in the past, not now )
