Poll: You're Not REALLY Using Outlook Are You?

Not at home but at work that is another question. To think that our MIS dept keeps it going is realy a hoot. It was pretty funny two days ago when I got a e-mail from the Persident of the corp. that said "HI' I saw him yesterday and thanked him for the bug. Good thing he is a good guy and we work closely on some things because it could have been a real problem.


MS Outlook= $hit.
 
Outlook is always where the trouble is heh mate?

The last virus GONER uses outlook to send up virus to other people. eerrr........
 
I use it at home and at work.

At work I am required to.

At home I would like to switch to say Evolution (I have a Linux box as well, see sig). But I have no idea on how to get all my e-mails out of Outlook, intact and transferable to another program. Anyone got a link to a program that can do this? But I do have it protected with Norton AV and Zone Alarm Pro.
 
I'd be happy to switch to another free program with the same functions that also connects and uses the right MS Exchange features. Any takers? Guess I'll be sticking with it after all.

um, won't that patch BLOCK many file extensions? I use outlook on one of my systems for easy document transfer. I have yet to have any problem with email viruses.
 
A properly configured firewall can also prevent a lot (not all) of the attachments from spreading in the first place. At work, we run Outlook w/ Exchange, and the Watchguard box will stop any attachments of various extensions (.vbs, .exe, .com, .scr, to name a few)
 
It only prevents you from opening the attachments in Outook. You can save them to the disk and then open them with another utility.

Its been a while since I've tried getting my e-mail out of Outlook, but here were my results in the past.

Doing an export->text destroys attachments.
Some programs I used could only deal with certain sizes of mail boxes (I have quite a bit of old e-mail that I keep around just for the heck of it).
Forwarding it to myself destroys all the headers such that they all come from me. Makes it hard to quickly find that e-mail from someone you are looking for.


But on the subject of spreading virii, it usually is very guillable or stupid users who propagate the things. Opening attachments from people you don't know or from people you do know but aren't expecting anything from. Oddball names for attachments. Horrible grammer or spelling in e-mails. A little bit of common sense could save a lot of headaches here.

Actually, later patches as well as Outlook 2002 do not even give you that option. It just blocks 'em and you can't get at 'em. Of course, there is a registry tweak to fix that for Outlook 2002. One of the later Outlook 2000 patches (individual patch or SR-2) blocks 'em and there is no fix.
 
I use Outlook at B-school and at home. But didnt really bother to look for patches cuz the IS dept at school already did that. Yes, I use the exchange server. But, usually when in viral season, I revert to pine which provided by the engin. school.
 
Don't most people use Outlook Express? Why don't they make a damn patch for Outlook Express, too?

I use Eudora myself. I just hate Outlook Express. I hate how every stinking window, be it a new message, a reply, whatever, opens up small. I prefer full screen windows, not a bunch of tiny windows that I have to resize. Dumbass Microsoft bastards.

 
I use Netscape at home and at work we have to use cc:mail which in a way is kind of cool cause NO ONE cares enough to write an exploit for cc:mail. At least not that I've seen...
