first, let me say something about this...

we are having a discussion about this in my class, and so far all of the people involved in the debate are morons. i am curious what ATOT thinks about holding this sort of standard in daily life.

do you honestly wish you could treat others as you treat yourself? maybe make the rule a little more lax and just generally be nice to everyone so they will be nice back. my arguement was that i think it would be good if we all held the same moral standards and treated everyone equally or better than we wish to be treated because corruption would be at a minimum. a lot of people may think twice about cheating/lying/stealing/whatever, but maybe they wouldnt. a few people said "it would do no good. no one would change." i dont necessarily disagree, but it sure as hell couldnt hurt. if it makes the average person more vulnerable to the asshat scam artists and the like, then maybe it WOULDNT be a good idea, but that may not really be a relevant factor.

anyways, a discussion about this would be cool, but isnt necessary obviously. just for a heads up, my class is like 60/40 against it.
isn't the point of this to assume that people would change?

I firmly believe that you should treat others the way you want to be treated. Before you flip off that guy for cutting you off, think about how many times you've cut someone off and how that must have made that other person feel. Now you understand what it's like to be cut off and how dangerous it is. Thus you vow to try your hardest to never cut anyone off again.
Those people only say that no one would change because they themselves don't want to change.

exactly! i really like how you explained it XZeroII. however, these people are pretty stubborn. nothing seems to change their minds, which i am not necessarily trying to do, but they arent even open minded enough to hear another opinion. it is rather annoying.

Which brings us back to thr reason for having "The Golden Rule."

A lot of people are screwed up by crappy parents and trying environment and mindless peers. They lack love and affection. It's hard to get through to people becuase i don't have the time. BUT, i have touched a heck of a lot of lives becuase i am nice to everyone.. and they appreciate it. You have to be prepared to get screamed at or treated badly or rudely at first by an abused person (child or grown up ) because that is how they communicate, but after a while, they open up to you. It's a nice feeling when they compliment you for it 😀

p.s. I'm talking about just everyday communication with people in the street, at work or supermarket, etc.

😕 huh?

I thought the golden rule was: "do unto others as you would have them do unto you".

I guess you're thinking of the variant: "treat others as you treat yourself".

Yea, probably. I just skimmed through the original post and saw this:

And then posted my response.🙂

well no offense but if you treat yourself poorly, you are a moron. you have no reason to treat yourself anyway except the best you possibly can. no one makes you do anything to yourself. it is within your control.

First of all, it's "Do unto others as you have them do unto you." not treat others how you treat yourself.

That being said, I treat everyone kindly and with respect up until the point that I feel they don't deserve it anymore.

i used to think you were a cool person, but the more i read your posts, the more of an ass you become...

obviously everyone knows the real saying, but i was talking about the actual meaning. if you treat yourself a certain way, you would want others to treat you the way which pleases you most.

do you feel smarter now?

How does the "actual saying" differ from the "actual meaning"??

It's simple. Treat others the way you would like them to treat you. There is nothing inherent in the saying that applies to the way you treat yourself.

Height or width equals 1/3 the length? (phi)

oops, I've been working in the woodshop too long this weekend.

Is that even English? My response to that is simply that I don't want other people jacking me off...

Well, as much as I'd love to jump into this seemingly hot debate...I came into here thinking the title said "golden ratio", of which, I didn't think there was much to argue abou 😉

continue ^_^
