Book 5 (Order of the Phoenix) is supposed to be out no earlier than June 2003. At least it is rumored to be as long as The Goblet of Fire (>700 pages).

Never read any,and don't have an interest to really, but maybe I will sometime or another...

I watched both movies though...
The first one was much better than the second one to me...

Oh my! Thats like as long as war and peace!
Seriously, if you are not a child I cannot fathom why you would watch either the movies or the books.
If you want real fantasy book there are tons of good, more mature (and I don't mean as in Piers Anthony mature) authors out there. Not the least of which being Tad Williams, the Memory, Sorrow and Thorn Trilogy (4 books in paperback) is exceptional! And the Otherworld (or Otherland?) series was d@mn good too.

But I guess to each their strange own....

Because they are just so damn good. Fine, the HP series isn't tremendously deep or mind-blowing and they certainly aren't works of "literature" but the books are real page-turners. I think I read the Prisoner of Azkaban in 48 hours. OK, no big deal, but this is from somebody who takes 6 months to finish the LOTR trilogy.

I like the HP series because the books serve as a quick withdrawl from the real world...something that all good fantasy should harbor. "Serious" fantasy may prove to be more satisifying over time but you need a quick fix now and then and Harry Potter pulls it off well. And let's not forget that Harry, Ron and Hermoine will be aged 15, 16, and 17 as the remaining 3 books are released respectively. No doubt Rowling will add even more dimensions to their characters, the problems they face and the conflicting emotions they often feel as they try to tackle them. It also helps that the series really started to take off with the Prisoner of Azkaban and became even stronger with the Goblet of Fire. It keeps getting better.

These books are such an easy read. That is why I love them. I had a hard time keeping up with the LOTR trilogy. On the other hand, I read Chamber of secrets in about 12 hours, Prisoner of Azkaban in about the same amount of time, and Goblet of Fire in a day and a half.

i just finished book 3 yesterday. i was on page 100, and i thought to myself "i'll just read a lil, then go done something else." i started, reading... and well, 4 hours later, i was done with the book. i just couldn't put it down. i liked it better than the previous 2. now... i need another harry potter fix right about now. book 4 will do, except i'm afraid i'll end up doing the same thing. and that's not good with finals coming up (i'm in high school).

ahhh. must wait :(

read something by robert jordan, or George RR martin, books that actually deserve the title fantasy novels.

These books are as rich as Dickens.
They will likely not contibute to as much social change, however.
It is ironic that anyone who is a fan of the Hobbit would decry Potter as mearly a children's tale.
Agreed, it is no LOTR, but that is a difficult book; many people simply can't read it.

My initial opinions of HP was the same as well. But one day I had nothing to do, so I borrowed the first book from my little cousin, and I found that I liked it! Actually, I loved it! I liked it so much, I went out and bought the availible 4 books for myself.

Further digging on the Internet led me to find an entire group of ADULTS that read and appreciate harry potter. There are numerous groups that are devoted for the discussion of Harry Potter by ADULTS. 50% of the Harry Potter audience comprises of Adults. JKR herself never claimed Harry Potter to be for kids.
