Anyone who does not use details should not be using a computer.

EDIT: Using any other view is almost as bad as hiding known file extensions.

now why shouldent i be useing a computer??? list is the most efficent one dont have to scroll down forf a month when you have a DIR with a tone of stuff in it

and win xp auto hides known extensions and i leave them hidden because i knwo what my carp is and move it to the correct place on my HD

Show all files ("yes, I really, really do want to show all files")
"No, I don't want to view the directory as a web page; really, I don't."
"No, don't hide the file extensions."

Why? I use list. If I need to know any other info I'll right-click and hit "properties."

Detail is clutter. List is clean.

I'm just kidding. List is acceptable.
I just like to see all the information. I don't need Windows to hide things from me.
That's why I want to see the details, I want to see the file extensions, and I want to see the hidden system files dammit.

You may know what your carp is, but you don't always know what other program's files are and it's often helpful to be able to see what file type it is. I want to know for instance if I'm opening a jpg or a gif or if the file I want to look at is a plain text ini or xml file or if it is a binary executable.
And as a developer, I will often have multiple files with the same names.
Especially with .net
 
While I'm glad (and not surprised) to see most people on AT are computer-savy enough to use details, it seems that a great lot of the general population use the icon type ones. It's a damn shame.

Edit - In fact I don't even think most use windows explorer, and this is the real shame. Stupid My Computer...

Why is it bad to avoid a view that has acres of wasted white space and doesn't tell me anything I can't see in the "details" box on the lower left?

Icons, no wasted space, most efficient view.

Details, lots of wasted space.

It is possible to view file extensions with List, which I use by the way. LIST ALL THE WAY!!!

Like I said, I was just kidding.

Personally, I don't want to have to select a file to see the details. Plus, I want to see more than just the file type and the size. I want to be able to see the modified date, created date, etc. I also want to be able to quickly sort the view by size, type, or date.
I also find it much easier to find a file in details view. In list view, you could add a file and it could cause other files to go from the bottom of one column to the top of another. Assuming you have files sorted alphabetically, a certain file will always be at roughly the same position in the list so it's easy to scroll down to it quickly. For me, that's much easier than scanning up and down multiple columns to find the file I'm looking for.
