ok so i've been offered a XFX 256mb 7900GT 520Mhz, a couple of months old, with a Zalman cooler, for AUD$300

or i can get a Sapphire 256mb X1950PRO brand new for AUD$300

now i HAVE been looking up reviews and stuff but i get confused cos teh 7900GT seems older and i'm unsure about how the differences between these two cards work out once overclocking is taken into account...

just a quick vote for one or the other is all i'm asking, even if you cbf typing a reply :)

thanks,

on these forums and on others, and in reviews, it seems that the X1950PRO, on average, beats the 7900GT... it's just that the XFX 7900GT 520mhz retails here for around AUD$430, vs. the AUD$300 for the X1950PRO

so i just can't stop thinking that getting a $430 card for $300, is better than one that actually sells for only $300... but i guess i should listen to everyone and the many reviews and get the X1950PRO?

decisions, decisions :/

X1950 XT is $40 more and out performs both and will last longer .

Zalman cooler on XFX 7900 GT model completely unnecessary, I should know, I put the Zalman VF900-Cu on my XFX 7900 GT. Max temp on your 520MHz 7900 will be around 68 C, you can OC to 600+ MHz easily on that card and temps rise only slightly.

However given those two choices at those prices, X1950PRO is better.

You also will lose one PCI slot with the 7900 GT + Zalman.

At that price point, the X1950 is pretty solid. I can only speculate about the retailers over there, but perhaps they didn't bother to lower the price on the 7900GT that much since its release a while back so the higher price is stale. As seen on the Newegg link that you posted, the price difference between the 2 cards is smaller in the US. It shouldn't be AUD$130 wide.

As others have mentioned, if you want to increase performance, the X1950XT is solid, but I have no idea about pricing and availability on that card in other countries. If your general price range is around AUD$300, then the new Pro is a better choice than a used 7900GT, even with a Zalman.

I agree with what others have stated in this thread and voted for the X1950pro. It's a better quality card. Often, the retailers don't keep their prices up to date and will charge the same price for outdated technology. Also, some retailers base their pricing strictly on supply and demand. The 7900GT was replaced by the 7900GS and 7950GT so its supply is thinning out. Since it's becoming more rare, some retailers will charge more for it even though there are better performers for less money. Don't base your opinion of a high tech product strictly on it's price. :)

I have to disagree on this one. Please don't label me a fanboy... I'm not :)

Check out my 7900gt/vf900. My temps idle and load are 10 degrees cooler than stock voltage/stock cooler. I am, however, in agreement about one thing; the vf900 is pretty pointless if you're keeping things stock. Maybe it's a touch quieter, but really, not necessary.

You should also know that I'm not familiar with X1950pro OC'ing, but I don't believe it does too well. And also, the 7900gt will not allow AA and HDR simultaneousely. The ATI will. Those things aside, I'd pick the 7900gt hands down.

Now, if you're not an OC'er, thats a different story... :)

Honestly liquid51, that doesn't make too much sense. You pointed out a flaw with the 7900gt, made a comment about overclocking but didn't have any information to back it up, and then recommended the card that generally underperforms.

I'm confused.

Ok. Some info on my OC is in sig. Info on the volt mod used to achieve these OC's is widely available:

Here's a thread on my OC: http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=31&threadid=1847758&enterthread=y

I mentioned that the nvidia card cannot do HDR and AA simultaneousely, a definate drawback. If this is very important to you, go with the ATI card. If you want a card that is capable of massive OC's, go with the 7900gt. That's what was more important to me, so I chose the 7900gt. If you don't want to OC, perhaps you should go with the ATI.

That's why I went with the 7900gt, hands down. I can pretty much guarantee that my card outperforms a stock X1950PRO (a STOCK X1950PRO). At those speeds, it had better :p
