$500 video cards for the win!

I can't get over how people are so upset about the price? what did you expect? and also, why in the world would 360 drop their price? they are already 200 dollars cheaper.

Put it this way, if Sony wanted to market purely on price, they could have done the following.

Switch HDMI to component. ($30)
Get rid of flash memory ports. ($10)
Switch to DVD-Rom instead of Blue-Ray. ($???????)
Get rid of wireless. ($50)

Right now, you can't even buy a blue-ray player, but when they are released, they will be $999. You are getting one for $600. Add in the cell processor and you have a system that probably costs around $1000 to make. Sony is taking a $400 hit on each system.

Personally, I wouldn't want to give up the features above to save $200-300. I'll happily pay to have the best console around.

Further, this is coming from a pro pc message board, where people spend $300 on a graphics card and $300 on a CPU. And sure, you can use a pc for more than games, but come on, do you really need a 4ghz cpu to play music and surf the internet? You get that power for games.

And this is coming from someone who has a 360. I love it. but to keep laughing at the price of the PS3 is rediculous.

there's alot in your post, but the only thing i'm going to address is your argument about bundling blu-ray. the argument is valid only on the basis that the ps3 is packing in alot of features for the price. there's no arguing that sony has put alot of features into their console for $600. but honoring their accomplishment is akin to praising a z06 for competing with cars twice as expensive. sure it's quite an accomplishment, but how many people are willing to dish out $65k for a car? what's more, what good would a blu-ray player be if the standard isn't widely adopted? hd-dvd players are already available for $400. blu-ray players are $1,000. now, what kind of player will most people buy? blu-ray = memory stick = betamax.

Considering the regular Xbox still doesn't cost that (and never will, discounting store clearance sales) I hope you enjoy playing with your Wii, because that's all you'll have.

😉

the original xbox couldn't be cost cut, ms didn't own the ip. the 360 will drop in price more like other consoles have in the past.

and video players can be cost cut like crazy as we've seen with dvd. so early adopting is just silly and no deal at all.

Same, it has been pretty brutal on Sony these last couple of days. I mean when you have major gaming media outlets which typically are on your side, like IGN and G4 calling you out, you know, "Houston we have a problem". A big problem.

My Wii has given me HUNDREDS of hours of entertainment already, I guess when the Nintendo comes out I'll have to play with that instead 🙁

The Wii will be good if they pull off the interial controller. But the demo I saw looked like it needed some work still.

A couple of interesting pieces on PS3 @ E3. The second comment on Kotaku is a gem, heh.

PS3: And all we were trying to do was play next-gen Sonic...

Mere moments after the conclusion of Sony's pre-E3 conference, we managed to knacker a PS3 with our very own hands - and we weren't even trying.

As the speeches and announcements drew to a close, attendees were given the opportunity to play PS3 for the very first time. Only a handful of pods were set up around the Los Angeles auditorium - but we made sure that we elbowed our way to the front of the queues.

Our efforts were initially rewarded with being able to play Sonic the Hedgehog on the next-gen machine. Or so we thought. To begin with, and once we got over the initial thrill of the simple realisation that we were playing PS3 for the first time ever, we were engaged by the game's classic Sonic styling.

In the demo, players are given the option of taking control of either Sonic or Silver the Hedgehog. Either way, it makes little difference: this game is ridiculously fast. And slightly twitchy and overly-responsive with it. Either that, or we were just so excited to be playing PlayStation 3 that we somehow forgot the skills necessary for controlling a blue hedgehog.

The environments and backdrops are huge - although it doesn't actually look that 'next-gen', more current-gen-and-a-half. As we were in the process of considering this, the game crashed and the screen went blank. We were loath to give up our pad to the civilians in the queue behind us, but there appeared to be little point in standing there looking at a blank screen.

Either way, it seemed as if we'd inadvertently killed a PlayStation 3. Fortunately, tech support was on hand in the form of a man opening up the outsize drawer in which the PS3 was hidden and hitting the reset button. In the process, the truth of what we were actually playing on was revealed: a huge betamax video recorder-looking dev kit, and not a sexy 'clear black' PS3 at all.

As a first taste of PS3, it wasn't quite what we had hoped for. But it was quite funny.

Sony Exec Sweats Out PS3 Demo

Post yesterday's PS3 presser, Sony gave members of the mass media and assorted hanger-ons an opportunity to test drive Gran Turismo HD. Overheard:

SONY SUIT #1: (in Japanese) The sound's too soft.
SONY SUIT #2: (in Japanese) It's terrible. We should turn it up. (to Security) Turn up the sound.
SECURITY: It's a monitor. We can't.
SONY SUIT #1: (in Japanese) What? Tell him to turn it up.
SONY SUIT #2: (in English) Turn up the sound.
SECURITY: We can't.
KOTAKU: (in Japanese) He says he can't.
SONY SUIT #2: (Takes the remote and turns up the sound) It's not getting louder.
SECURITY: It's running on an emulator.
KOTAKU: (in Japanese) He says it is running on an emulator. Is it running on an emulator?
SONY SUIT #1: (in Japanese) No, it isn't.
KOTAKU: Is it running on an emulator?
SECURITY: Yeah, it's running on an emulator.
KOTAKU: (in Japanese) He says it's an emulator.

speculation about which console will emerge victorious is still pretty split among the three players. but because of the $600 price tag on the premium ps3 system and predicted low launch price of the wii combined with an xbox 360 price drop, would you buy the 360 and the wii in place of the PS3?

i realize that we still have no idea how much the wii will cost and nor do we know whether or not microsoft will drop the price of the 360, but just pretend that you have a $200-$300 launch price for the wii and a $50-100 price drop on the xbox360 premium so that the combined price is $600. (Imagine a $200 wii price and a $300 xbox360  :laugh😉.

Wheres the Option for PS3/360...

the Wii is for children and will die a horrible death becasue of the gimmicky gadgets they are relying on over technology..

How does 'technology' (as if 3D motion and acceleration sensing wasn't) that you claim the other systems have make the games any better? More colours? More bangs? What is it?

Bahaha.

Just Wii for me, then a 360 (again, mine died) when the shrink the die size of the processor and hopefully include HD-DVD. PS3 I'll probably get a couple years from now.

It targets everyone as opposed to 14-20 year olds who think that a blood counter in the corner of the screen showing gallons spilled is better than actual gameplay.

There's nothing wrong with playing GTA. Besides, I fall out of your age range by one year =). Anyways, I'd rather boot up my SNES (which I do have hooked up at the moment) then whip out money for a new system to feel like a 5 year old again.

All three eventually.

Sony's pricing is just too high and third party support doesn't appear as good as it was (see GTA4 on 360 for example). Before I thought Wii would crash and fail. I thought the same of DS. But I think now that Wii will take Japan, and 360 will dominate the US. Microsoft will see this opportunity and throw money to make 360 succeed.

PS3 will probably sell out at launch, but they're going to have to lower the price quickly if they hope to take this generation. But just annoucing the price was dumb because now people are thinking that it's too expensive, and they're already thinking about getting a 360 instead.

For the life of me. I don't think me or anyone else for that matter will get over the name Wii.
