Poll: Would you work if you didn't have to?

I'd probably work part time or maybe start a small business and only work when I wanted to. I'd certainly take a lot of time off to do stuff I've always wanted to do but never had time or money to do.

Hell no. Life is way too short as it is. I could keep myself busy for a long time assuming I had the money to continue my current standard of living and do the things I wanted to do. Work is just a means to an end.

No way I'd have an 8-5 where I answered to "the man". But I think my natural interests and compassion would have me toiling away for some cause, and maybe just to be productive, but completely on my own terms.

Probably part time. I really like my job, it's the office politics which I can't stand. Assuming I had won the lottery or whatever, I'd go to school.

I DO sit front row center in classes. I see and hear better when I do, I have fewer distractions without a bunch of fuckheads in front of me messing with their cell phones and iPods.
Generally, IF I ask a question, either it wasn't covered in the text or lecture, OR I need clarification on a point.


I notice lots of people say they'd volunteer if they didn't have to work. I've considered that but I just can't find any causes that I care about enough anymore to give my time...:shocked:

I don't consider hobbies to be the same as working or <gag> volunteering. (although I guess volunteering COULD be considered a hobby since you're not getting paid for it.)

Now I can agree with you about that. I always try to sit in the front for the same reason. Its much easier to pay attention.

If I never had to worry about money I would bar tend at a slow, classy lounge. The kind of place that sees under 50 people a night. I love the human interaction, and the easy pace would keep me busy without stressing me out. Keep a few guys who can tend bar on staff so I can take time off whenever I want. Have them bar back when I'm working (but pay them a usual night in tips so they stay happy).

I've worked in the service industry long enough to enjoy it at times. I also know it can be rough as hell. If I was set on cash I wouldn't want to work someplace busy and stressful. It would be nice once in a while, keep the blood flowing and an edge to ya, but I don't need that all the time.

Id be pretty bored without work. For the record, I do have plenty of hobbies, it's the human interaction I need though. If I could just ski and rock climb all day every day Id do that. But probably still work a bit.

Quasi this....

I would buy an already established neighborhood/corner bar. Simply a "Change of Ownership" and nothing else. All regular staff would stay on, name wouldn't change, no pricing or menu changes, nothing. The regulars and customers would never even know except for the fact that I'd be behind the bar. That's it.

First I'd vacation somewhere for a while to recharge my dying batteries. Then I'd get a part time job somewhere, probably end up drifting from job to job though because I'd bounce whenever I needed to go out of town for a run.

Yea basically, although short term might end up being like 10 years.... who knows how long I'd enjoy doing my own thing. But eventually I'd want to give something back.

Assuming that I pay the idiot tax and somehow come away with millions, there's no way that I work. I have great hobbies, kids and I would have time to volunteer more than the 2x per year I do now. I need social interaction so I'd look for a non-profit I like and donate about 20 hours/week. I'd possibly resuscitate a few coding projects from college just to keep my skills sharp but realistically I'd play tons of chess & tennis.
