Poll: Would you take a one way trip to Mars?

Lifer
In the spirit of bettering mankind, would you take a one way trip to Mars? Any debts you have back home would be taken care of. You can't bring anybody although you could have video-mail contact with them.

edit:
I guess I should add that you'd be part of a team that sets up colonization of of Mars. Another group of people will be sent up after say.. 20 year.

Does it make a difference who else will be going up with you? I just wanted to see how many people would trade their time on earth to further mankind's knowledge of Mars. Put mankind before your life.

I personally wouldn't. I'm sorry to say but I'm a selfish bastard.

Yes (If accompanied by Elizabeth Hurley, Charlize Theron, Kirsten Dunst, Shannon Elizabeth, Reese Witherspoon, and Heather Graham and copious amounts of beer and pretzels!)

😀

send me a new computer (and new babe) every 6 months and i'd go

(and all the chem supplies i want, i'm a chem dork like that)

What the hell do you mean ONE WAY?! I'm gonna fvcking DIE up there?!
Sorry but no. Dying from ass...asph...aph... Lack of air doesnt seem like a good way to die. Especially 9 ba-jillion miles from anyone else.

Depends on what I would be sent with. If this were to be a scientific exploration, and planned to only last for a couple years before the supplies/equipment ran out, hell no.

If it was going to be a colonization effort, which implies people including an even or possibly favorable woman to man ratio, with the ability to put together a whole new society, f***ing A, I'm in for it.

Well, that doesnt hurt 😉 , but if you have read The Moon is a Harsh Mistress by Heinlein, you'd have a grasp of the opportunities available. No, it isnt an entirely realistic book, and there are some ideas that just wouldnt fly, but I think some of the ideas he put in the book would work.

I think my debts at home would be the last of my worries. Good luck to the creditors trying to collect from me while I'm on Mars!?!

I just put that in there so people that have resposiblities like a family that owns a home wouldn't have to worry about that.

I wouldn't go alone, but I would go with others on a one way trip to better mankind, if it were to set up a colony either to breed or to prepare for others who would be coming after us, understanding the possibility that unforseen circumstances could leave us stranded.

Screw bettering the mankind angle. I'd go in a second if there was an established colony to get away from most of mankind.

I'd love to be able to stake out an area, make a constitution to the effect of "there shall be no restriction of personal rights except when the exercise of those personal rights interferes with the rights of others", and call it a day.

Of course, it would only be a matter of time before some asshats managed to convince most people that the above only applies to things the majority agrees with...

Sure, if I was assured my life expectance wasn't going to decrease significantly... (other than the immediate risks of the flight) and I found the other people on the trip to be compatible. (and cute)

I cannot imagine a more boring place to be stationed for long periods of time. To look from one horizon to the other without any sign of any type of life for days on end would lead me, and probably most other people, to insanity. I will stay home until they find another planet with grass, trees, water, and all the other things that make this planet so gorgeous from above.

You realize that any planet that contains all those things would have to be terraformed by humans, right? And that Mars is the best choice for terraforming a planet in our solar system?
