POLL: Would You Pay More?

People are always b!tching about how Wal-Mart is bad for the economy due to their business practices, but also because they sell tons of cheaply made products from China. Likewise they b!tch about people from Mexico "stealing jobs," when those people are working for less than minimum wage and are paid under the table. One has to wonder if they would be able to fill those jobs if they were forced to hire American workers. My personal suspicion would be yes, due to my limited experience with a local farmer that filled out his work force with teen-agers every Summer. They would probably hire fewer workers if forced to comply with minimum wage laws, but that has nothing to do with the poll.

For the purposes of the poll, assume that buying non-Chinese products and eliminating the illegal immigrant labor force would send prices of produce, products, etc. skyrocketing. Would you be willing to pay more if the country were to move away from Chinese products and illegal immigrant labor?

Yes. I hate walmart, I don't shop there. I aim to get quality products rather than the absolute cheapest. I appreciate good craftmanship and support.

Edit: Illegal immigrants working in felds and such doesn't bother me at all, but moving our manufacturing and development overseas does.

I have a problem with one, but not the other point.

I don't mind cheap products from China. It's part of a global economy.

I do have a problem, though, with illegal immigration. There is a process to become a US Citizen and it should be followed.

Same here. The products I've purchased from Walmart have been fine.

In my opinion, the top executives has tasted the fruits of cheap labor, and that they can get away with outsourcing WITHOUT lowering the cost of the product. This applies to not only manufacturing jobs, but white collar jobs as well.

Heres my solution:
All companies (big or small) are allowed to outsource. However, companies who outsource shall pay a hefty tax, more than companies who dont. Companies who are able to prove that all of their employees are legal citizens (or people with visas, etc..) will be eligible for tax breaks.

Disagree with your second point. However, there should be a fine for companies whose payrolls include illegals.

the thing is most of the people who fit this bill who you claim "NEED" these jobs don't want to work in walmart or on a strawberry field or whatever. The iillegals take all the sh!t jobs no one wants.

Having the lower skill manufacturing jobs or grunt work jobs going to the illegals or moving overseas is all part of a global economy.

Uneducated people believe protectionist policy and "fair" trade will "save" our economy and create more jobs. In fact, it will do exactly the opposite. History teaches us that what made the depression so bad and so long was protectionist trade policies and huge tarriffs (Smoot-Hawley act) passed to "save our economy and create jobs."

People, if we price our labor too high, companies will find labor elsewhere. The key to solving this is not protectionist policy --which has been proven to destroy economies-- but adaptation.

No, you're wrong. Those people want those jobs. They just won't do it because they want to do the jobs and be paid the same salary as a skilled worker. Then they whine because the companies won't hire them because of their salary requirements. The immigrants will work for what they're worth and work harder too.
