No. It's bribery. Any honest cop would turn it down if offered.
Considering you aren't offering it in exchange for any favours, stated or implied, what's the issue? You're just showing a token of your appreciation for the hard work they do.

Ah... but you are seeking an implied favor. You're hoping that the cop will hang around your place and defend it more from criminals than he would for other places.
No I wouldn't. The thought of giving it to them is satisfaction enough for me. I'd seek nothing in return, even if it seems that way from first thought. If he never comes back, I'd still be glad I gave it to him. My intentions would be satisfied. The whole point is to show appreciation.

And I don't know if this really needs to be said, but I kind of appreciate cops more than garbagemen, even though they both do necessary and hard work. Anyone who has to ask why needs a reality check.

No, I'm hoping that some asshole won't shoot him in the face during a traffic stop because "dem MoFockin PIGZ be trippin' on mah ride". While it's a hard concept to grasp coming from a young male, I respect cops and the hard work they do, and all I'd want is for them to have a little bit of a bright spot in an otherwise hellish day.

- M4H

Well maybe in pleasantville where the average cop is really trying to serve and protect people I would agree with you. But in MY expierences there are more asshole cops then not. Yes some do there job and they do it well. But for the most part they are a bunch of lazy power tripping assholes.

-Xionide
Maybe YOU should stop being such a lazy asshole and try going on a ride-along. Then you'll see what a law-enforcement job is all about.

cops don't pull the bad sh1t when there's a witness. :p

Cops have a sh!t job for low pay. They deserve a freebie and the appreciation of the community. In general I don't like cops and I get pissed that they can park in the red zone to drop off dry cleaning and I can't, but I can respect the job they have to do.

I would and have done it. In most restaurants it is common to give drinks for free and discounts on meals and I have yet to see a case of it being abused.

There's a convenience store here that a lot of the officers go to when they can take a break. I went there with a couple of 'em when I was on a ride-a-long and they got free coffee. They tried to pay, but the cashiers wouldn't let them. Both parties involved are very appreciative. There have been a few armed robberies at the various stores around town, but I've never heard of that one getting robbed.

When I become an officer I won't expect free stuff, but if and when I get it I'll be very appreciative. It's good for all concerned when a proprieter and an officer have a good repoir, and the police presence will cut down on crime in the area.

When cops come into my pizzeria/restaurant, most of the time they get some food for free. Regular slices, fountain drinks, pinwheels, and other small things are usually for free. Say they order a chicken roll, we'll usually just charge 'em for the soda then so it's not a total loss. $1.25 is better then $4 so they don't complain.
