You own a bakery/deli and a police officer in uniform walks in and wants just a coffee. Do you give it away for free ?

PRO: I mean, does that 1 cup really cost you that much ? You're basically showing appreciation for the job they do.
CON: What if you did give it for free and he tells all his/her buddies about it and they all start coming to you expecting the same ?

Sure would. The Wendy's I worked at back in HS gave Police Officers free lunches. This meant better and more patrol. Police presence turns away criminals.

We used to give coffee for free to our local cops all the time. They appreciate it, and when you need them, they are more than happy to help. In fact, I got out of one ticket, because a cop recognized me as the drive-up bank teller who always offered to fill up his coffee.

Most would be required to refuse, I believe.

My brother & I got pulled over leaving a Krispy Kreme parking lot (forgot to turn our lights on, were still under the bright lights). Cop was cool, we offered him a donut - he said he couldn't take it.

Oh well, more for us.

Cops have a sh!t job for low pay. They deserve a freebie and the appreciation of the community. In general I don't like cops and I get pissed that they can park in the red zone to drop off dry cleaning and I can't, but I can respect the job they have to do.

I think in that situation it would be considered a bribe.... In a coffee shop or bakery where you have done nothing wrong yet, it would be being appreciative or whatever.

LMAO I cant believe you offered a cop a donut. Did you oink at him too?

Could be worse.

A friend of mine about 10 years ago was caught drinking while driving. While the cop was talking to him, he offered the cop a beer! :D

I worked for a bagel shop. There was a cop who came in almost every day. I always gave him his coffee for free. I never really said anything about it, I just rang up his bagel and left out the coffee. I did it for postal workers, too. They never came back with the whole precinct hoping for free coffee....

Yah .. as long as they don't abuse it. Seriously, how much does coffee cost? It would probably only about to a buck or two a day if a bunch of cops showed up. It's worth it for the increased police presence and good relations.

Depends on the situation. If I knew the cop from them doing patrols in the area and being a previous customer, then yes I'd give it to them. If not, then it's still business. It also depends on their attitude. If you get one of those cops on a power trip (there's enough evidence of those around here) who seems to think he's entitled to it, then no way in hell.

Dunno sounds like the buddy system. You scratch my back, I scratch yours type of deal. Those arn't supposed to exist within law enforcement :). We have strict rules in IT that we cannot accept certain gifts from people because it creates an atmosphere of favoritism, I'd like to think those rules apply across the board for the same reason. Especially favoritism in such a duty as law enforcement.

Whats favoritism? Well, not ticketing someone because you recognize him as the guy who gives you the free coffee every morning is a start.

Well a cop lives 2 doors down from me. That's still favoritism based on no reward at all.

Police have discretion. Accept it.

My wife never gets tickets while wearing nurse's scrubs. She works at the local hospital too as an RN, so the local cops have seen her around.

You think a cop is going to ticket a nurse who might have to save their life in the hospital? :)

Umm no. Why should they get special treatment? Cops already get enough privelages, being allowed to run red lights and all while I have to pay them enough for 200 donuts because I ran a stopsign to avoid being killed by a Mustang. I'll be damned if I'm giving them any God damn coffee.

i would def. give free coffee, cuz they come in, get a free coffee and then order a donut or what not else so you get traffic in.

Good call...

I would give the guy his coffee for free, especially if he is buying something else. I doubt he is going to bring his buddies in. However, you might find that you have more cops hanging around your place, which isn't really a bad thing, is it?
