Poll: Would This Be Considered Theft?

I switched prices on an item that I wanted to buy. The item I wanted was marked too high in my opinion, so I made a price adjustment. Instead of paying $4.99, I switched it to $2.99.

I didn't steal the item, just made it a bit cheaper. Would this be considered theft and could someone be prosecuted for shoplifting if they did this?

There's a sure way to tell.

Go back to the store, tell them you did it. If you're arrested on the spot, its shoplifting.

BTW, what kind of store did you go to that didn't send someone to verify the price when it rang up $4.99 (and not 2.99 like the tag said?)

Well, it depends. If it was the same item, I wouldn't think so. I once found a game at CompUSA with 4 different prices on 4 different boxes so I took the lowest priced box, but if they were different products, then yes, it is stealing.

How were you raised. Ofcourse it's theft. You only paid for part of the product but walked out the door with the whole product.

in that case, I would consider it theft.

However, if the store accidently mispriced something, and you realize it, you are in your full legal rights to buy it at that price. And if they notice that its mispriced, and try to make you pay the higher price, guess what, they are breaking the law.

Consider it this way. You are having a yard sale and mark an item of yours with a sticker that says you want $10.00 for it. Someone comes along and switches this sticker with one off another item you had marked as $5.00. Did that person just steal $5.00 from you? At a minimum it is fraud. If you felt the price was too high you could have either dickered with them to lower it or taken your business elsewhere.

Yep. Take it back, tell them you had a little nephew with you who told you he switched the prices (if you're too embarassed to say it was you), pay the difference and clear the slate. It's obviously bugging you if you came on here to ask about. Go take care of business.

exactly. now if we said he's going to hell for doing this, then it would be passing judgement and condemning him. i mean, he is going to hell for this, but none of us said that.

It's not so much bugging me as I wondered what others would consider this act. Grocery stores regularly upcharge me for sale items that somehow scan at higher prices. I've often walked out of the store and noticed it only when I got home. How many extra dollars, quarters, dimes have they made off me in this dishonest way? So I got tired of it and decided that I wanted a 2 dollar discount to make up for some of the times I was overcharged. I put a price sticker on an item for a sale price of $2.99 and got a regular priced item &quot;on sale&quot; to make up for all of the upcharges the store had done to me in the past. I wasn't actually &quot;stealing&quot; an item, I paid what I felt I should have and considered it even.

Let me put this into perspective for you.

I'm driving around in my 1989 Honda Accord with the crumpled front end, &amp; I see a nice shiny Diablo 6.0 sitting in a dealership. I drive in, take the Diablo, leave my Accord + $500 cash. Sound fair? I paid what what I felt I should have and considered it even. I have a car, they have a car + my $500.

I hope this is something you learned on your own, surely your parents taught you better.

That's wrong! Where are your morals? You knowingly switched something. That's not stealing. It's being deceitful and dishonest. Although I don't think you can compare this to Viper GTS comparison between a Diablo and Accord scenario (that's on a much larger scale, we're talking about $2 here).

So if you went home and realized the pricing errors in the past, why not just go back to the store and speak to a manager?
