Isn't the legal drinking age a state law but the fact that you must be 18 to vote is a federal law?

The drinking age is a state law in name only. I'm not sure how long ago it was, but the feds decided to grant highway money contingent on the state drinking age. If it was 21, then the states got money. If it was any younger, the states got zip. So, the eventual outcome was that the drinking age became a national 21. So basically, the feds mandated that every state law be changed to 21 or no money. So, the feds really are in control of both the drinking age and the voting age, which is a constitutional amendment, not just a law.

that is exactly what happened, it was during the early/mid 80's that the feds "forced" the states to raise the age

I think you should learn to drink before you learn to drive. 8-10 would be a good age if the parents wanted.

How does one learn to drink?

Same way they learn to drive, from someone with more experiance, an adult. Not the way I have seen many learn, at a HS party or frat house who almost die from alcohol poisioning because they have no clue and are thought by a bunch of young morons like they are..

It still sounds kinda weird. You really think 8-10 year old kids learning to drink is a good idea?

it's not like it really matters....kids can get alcohol whenever they please......at least that's been my experience....should be really high, college kids going to parties getting drunk not knowing their limits and then driving off and creaming someone.....

IIRC, it was Republican posterchild Elizabeth Dole who pushed this.

I voted any age...in France and other countries, the drinking age is pretty much ignored and you don't have kids getting hammered on their 21st birthdays and killing themselves, or sneaking alcohol and driving drunk, etc....

I believe that here in IL they did raise the age to get a license to 18.

Personally a 16yr old who just got his license driving a mustang scares the crap out of me (though I did have a mustang at 15 since I had a license at 14 and a permit at 12).

My family is German and we have beer/wine with every meal. I remember at family gatherings having a glass of wine or a beer. I learned to Not drink for the sake of getting drunk (learned that in college! =) ) but to have a good time. I know when I have passed the limit to the amount I can drink. Which is 4 beers a night after that I have a good buzz going.

But they are not going to lower it to that point so I think it should be 18. Heck if you can join the military and fight or die then you have the right. If you can be tried as a adult then you should have the right. If they are going to claim you are an adult in some things then it should be for everything.

18 or 19 like Canada. 😀
The United States will never submit to any Canadian laws. Canada shouldn't even be a country--sooner or later you will annexed into the United States, whether you want to be or not.

More on topic, I believe that there should be no drinking age. It is the role of parents (or, lacking parents, some other role model(s)) to educate their children in drinking.

ROTFL

I think it should be 18 like in most parts of the world

I say 19. On the poll at least... Personally, 18. No, I don't drink much, and yes, I'm over 21.

Reason being, I think if you can get drafted, smoke, get tried legally as an , and have all the resposibilities of one, there should not be an item denied to you which someone older can get. Perhaps the fact that you *can* get it might make people more responsible, and less likely to go rebel by sneaking around and getting some. Either that or move all said "privs" up to 21 to match drinking.

I agree. 18 is old enough to be an "adult" in the laws eyes, old enough to drink.

16-18 as a range? How fvcking stupid can you be????

The drinking age should be 18, the driving age should be 20. End of story.

Whew! Glad that's over. Can we go home now Vadatajs? 🙂

I know, should have put 16-17 down as a rage. But by the time I wanted to change that, it woulda messed up the results. There were atleast 10+ votes for 16-18 by then. Sorry! 🙂

Voted 19 but I dont think it makes a difference what age the limit is. People under the limit are going to drink regardless.

You can't really set an age, since people at any age are of varying degrees of maturity. Hell, I know people know that are 21+ that really shouldn't be allowed to drink. On the other hand, I had some friends in HS that were periodic (responsible) drinkers and nothing ever came of it and they went to good colleges or have good jobs now. It depends 100% on the individual.

When I turned 21, my boss told me "Oh, 21 eh? Seems to me 21 was the age I stopped drinking???" haha.
