Only in nitch markets. I have no ran windows in a VERY long time. I have only recently moved to mac from linux.

So either I actually don't use a computer. Or it is ready.

We heard the same shit about firefox. Hell my grandma used linux from ubuntu 6.06 until ubuntu 7.10. Then she bought a new computer and it came with windows. Her phone calls to me went up drastically at that point. Mostly because of spyware and other crap infecting her. She had a few "How do I do this in windows?" questions, but she was able to do it no problem (She went from windows 98 to ubuntu, to windows xp).

In terms of hardware, yes there are issues, but they are shrinking everyday. If your computer is not cutting edge then I'd say you have a better then average chance it will work. If you computer is old you are almost 100%. The older your machine gets the better chance of running linux then finding windows drivers.

I recently moved my wife off windows. I bought a new macbook pro and she wanted my "old" (6 months) one. So I took her computer and stuck ubuntu 9.04 on it. Everything, even the shitty usb wireless from att worked without a glitch. If I was to put windows on it I would have to spend at least 45 minutes tracking down the motherboard, video, sound, network and wireless drivers as I have long lost the CD's. Hell, I don't even know the brand on some of the hardware. Right now it is running my torrent/ps3 media center/web browser/email system. It sits right next to my mac and works in tandem with it. I use it to have docs up while I'm programing. I could easily ditch my mac and still be 100% productive. I only went mac because I really really like the UI and I like the smoothness of the applications (adium, garage band, iWork, textmate, etc). But I've always been able to do anything I've wanted to do without putting in any more work then it would be in windows to do it.

So...which is it going to be?
Interesting!

I suppose it doesn't make any difference what ppl 'say' - you're only interested in the vote tally - probably don't want to start a fight - but...

For the lurkers...

I've been distro hopping for a while now - probably install 3-4 OSs a month, on the whole.

Truthfully, 7 leaves me flat, e.g. unexcited. I like the *looks*, and it's certainly going to be a relevant release, but it's hardly the 'Second Coming" in my book.

'Jaunty' on the other hand has been a pure joy - and I'm an Ubuntu hater from way back!

In my mind's eye, I see Jaunty and 7 as functional equivalents and suitable 'bookends'...

They say the proof is in the putting. Yes, indeed! :D

What do I run on MY lappy??? Linux Mint/Vista/7 (triple booted)

What do I run on my desktop? Jaunty & openSUSE/FreeBSD/W2K Pro (in VMs).

Given the parameters of your query - I would vote for 7, however...

I think the 'smart move' would be to install Jaunty as your primary OS and run 7 in a VM. That way you got the best of all possible worlds!

I'd say pick one, since they're both free right now, and see which one you like better. I was bouncing between ubuntu 9.04 and Windows 7. Went with Windows 7 and will run Ubuntu 9.04 in a VM and go from there. It was just easier for me and I play some games that I wanted to just install and go so it was the best choice. I've been striving for something different and that's where ubuntu will come in. If it works out well I'll switch places. ubuntu 9.04 with Windows 7 in a VM.
LoL!

I decided to read this whole thread, after I voted/posted, and...

Basically, we're making the same recommendation!

We must be OS soul mates or something... :D

Heh! I hear you...

I fixed a friend's Vista x64 lappy a couple of weeks ago - browser wouldn't work on any secure pages, e.g. anything requiring auth.

Bottom line: Sure, it had 73 trojans and 100+ pups, but... the biggest problem was Norton (which acts like a virus too)!

Bwahahaha! You can't even trust the AV software these days!

Er...

I suppose it goes without saying, but Linux doesn't require any additional Anti-Virus software. Au contraire, Linux is an excellent hacking platform!

That's the first thing you see when you boot a fresh install of 7 - WARNING! WARNING! INSTALL AV SOFTWARE IMMEDIATELY!!!

And, 7 will nag you until you install it! Not too confidence inspiring, to say the least... :)

And the first thing you hear when you start your car is a few beeps telling you to put your seatbelt on, does that kill your confidence in your car too?

So does XP and Vista. When you're running the most used OS in the world, you're much more likely to be a target. Big deal that it's trying to remind you to do something for your computer's safety.

Big deal that I have to wear sunscreen outside if I don't want to get burned. Big deal that I have to wear bug repellent if I don't want to get bites all over in the woods.

Doesn't have anything to do with my confidence in anything...
