POLL: Will PC's get louder or quieter in the near future?

Seems like lots of people are concerned about the noise of their PC, which is reasonable... nobody wants their PC to drown out the vacuum cleaner 😀 Fans are a necessity as it is, but with faster speeds and CPU's putting out as much heat as the Prescott bigger heatsinks and more airflow will be required which will make it difficult to keep PC's quiet. So either the industry will have to find a way to keep PC's quiet, or Average Joe will have to get use to the whirr of his fans.

I'm going to say "both" and that it will depend on the demographic. There is definitely a market for quieter PCs.

Have you heard any of the newer Dell Inspirions? (sp?) A friend of the family paid to have me set their new one up, and I couldnt figure out how to get the thing on... because it was on already. What will they think of next?

Laptops, sure... I have a Latitude CPi A that's 4 or 5 years old that's dead silent when the hard drive is shut off 😀

The bigger the fan and heatsink, the quieter they can be. Heatsinks will get bigger maybe, but PCs won't get louder.

Super quiet Dell desktops = weak ass cooling
But its fine for what most Dell users do.

my laptop is dead silent and the fan has a thermal sensor that kicks it on every few minutes on 2 speeds depending on how hot it gets inside.

Cool n Quiet on the AMD side, dunno about Intel. Depends if they switch to the P-M's architecture for their desktop chips or continue with furnaces like Prescott.

In general, CPU technology "wants" to be smaller for speed with the side effect of power reduction. This, in turn, reduces heat generation. Computers should be getting quieter (except for the overclockers).
