Poll: Why upgrade to WIN2000????? Why not stay at WIN 98 SE?

Verygreedy

Senior member
I have noticed that I am actually having MORE freezes using WIN2k over WIN 98 SE. I think I am going back.. Games run BETTER using WIN 98SE as your OS> Maybe Ill dual boot setup.. anyone know how to do that?? I have 2 decent size harddisks... So far Im NOT impressed with WIN2k. My 2Cents. ANy suggestions??

Have you done any of the service pack upgrades from microsoft's support site? I would recommend trying to update before you switch back. Also, how much ram do you have in your system? I was using 98se before and I admit I was fairly happy with it, but I upgraded to 2k and it's a night and day difference. I can leave this machine up for 1 week, 2 weeks at a time without any problems at ALL. With 98se, I had to reboot once every 2-3 days at best, or it would eventually start to slow down. With 2k, these problems are all fixed and all my games run fine in 2k.

Stick with it and try to do some updates, that's probably all you need.

If win2k doesn't run stable for you, why would you dual boot!! thats the best part of 2k!

My suggestion: Figure out what is freezing 2k

Most of the specs ive seen show 3dgames running much slower using win2k over 98se. I mean Im not freezing hourly or anything but at least once a day.. with 98se I ran for a MONTH with no freezes.. that wasnt uncommon.

Why upgrade?

My reasons was:

1: Support for files over 2Gb!!!!
2: Better stability.
3: Just had to try it out, now I'm happy with it.......
4: I'm not playing many games......

hehee.. no poll. I forgot to fill that out I guess. Anyways.. WIn98 SE did me fine.. Im going BACK. Format Hard Disk tomorrow. 🙁 New RAM coming! CAS 2 Crucial.. should be nicer

Considering the cost of the package, I see no compelling reason for the home or small business user to upgrade from Windows 9x to Windows 2000. The only concrete advantage of 2K over 9x is its added stability, but properly-configured 9x systems can display similar stability over limitted uptimes. And since it doesn't hurt to shut your computer down overnight, you can get a free reboot once a day, preventing the memory leaks and software conflicts that typically plague overworked 9x boxes. Beside its driver and hardware support issues still being addressed, Windows 2000 is loaded with powerful enterprise network administration services that are out of place for the vast majority of users -- adding to the complexity of the operating system.

If you're getting 2K for free (😉), it's probably worth the hassle of transition. But why pay Microsoft over $100 just to save a few reboots a week?

OC Freak.. was it easy to UNLOCK your Tbird 1200 .. I have the same CPU. I heard the pencil trick doesnt usually work. L1 bridges.. any extra tips?

That's why i am staying with Win98,it's very stable for me.

Sometimes i wish it did crash. NOT!! . 🙂

If stability or the lack of were an issue with me then i might consider it it,but i figure if it's not stable in Win98 it will not be stable in Win2k.

And yes i did try Win2k for a while but poor gaming & bad twinview support finally put the nail in Win2k's coffin.

I just like the idea of updating to new software.. not a reason to actually do it. Im going with 98SE. Win2k still needs work. My other sound card wasnt supported.. HOW LAME.

I can see why Win98 would have much more support,it's actually nothing more than win95+updates.

In 3 or 4 years Win2k might be just as good as win98se is right now for supporting everything that's made, but for now i will be happy in 98 until it matures.😉

aww. crap. I have a dentist check up in 6 hours.. damn I better go to bed@!!! heheh.. Guess I should go brush after half a dozen mountain dews! Au revior all!! NEW STUFF COMING TOMORROW WOO HOO.. new RAM AND MAYBE EVEN MY NEW GEFORCE! comeon UPS

I find 00 to be faster as well as more stable. Everthing has the potential to be faster with it and games are only limited by shoddy programming - of the game or video drivers. Obviously if 00 is crashing all over the place you have some hardware problems and/or as said have not patched it up. Also, go to tweakfiles or somesuch for the guides on shutting off all the extra crap services that run by default. My take is that IF the extra cost of the license and minimum RAM are not an issue, then there is no reason not to use 00. If you are going to go to that trouble, then ditching any crap hardware (or decent hardware crippled by crap drivers) is not really an issue either.

I`m still using Win98 OS1,very stable infact I`ve no problems with it & also being a gamer is the main reason why I`ve not upgraded ,besides Microsoft have enough of my money at the moment.

🙂

why upgrade:

1) smp , i need for my dual setup
2) stability
3) memory problem! my win98se hang on startup when i put more than 512mb memory, that's why i change my dual boot into one boot (win2k)
4) more features in win2k

AS most are saying, the security is ALOT better. I cant change over yet till ATI fixes the damn Radeon drivers. My gf2gts was great with it but the radeon is so much prettier. Ohhhwell

Not to mention that you dont develop jach sh*t in 9x once you've started using w2k.
And if you have your own permanent LAN at home, you will really want to be running all clients
on the w2k platform.
Besides, using the right drivers and tweaking will get your system up and running,
also disable some of the services you dont need.
And, if you are using Radeon, well, the w2k drivers are really lame for that card,
go geforce 😛
