I personally think the Grammies are the Oscar's of music. They give awards to the people who are politically correct instead of the people/movie that deserve them. I am not trying to take anything away from Norah Jones but how can you give best Album and best Record to a person with 1 hit song? Eminem(who I actually hate) has 3-4 #1 songs on his album that was up for that category yet a one hit wonder wins because they aren't going to give a guy like like Eminem the best Album/Record Grammy. Being a Metallica fan, I am sure some of you will remember in the early 90's when Jethro Tull won best Grammy over Metallica for Best Heavy Metal Song with Aqualung. Since when is Jethro Tull Heavy Metal? or popular for that matter? :disgust:

The Grammys, as well as the Oscars, aren't determined by what are hits and what aren't.

Boosting these artists egos even more by having awards shows is the last thing we should be doing.

And here's the lamest argument we'll see in this thread. :) Thanks for making it early on.

Most times, the major categories are popularity contests. If seen as such, then no, not a joke, but otherwise--YES!!

Popularity contest? Since when is bluegrass popular?

Most award shows are a joke now because there are so many of them. Its like boxing with its multitude of belts...there are so many now that any award loses its weight and credibility.

In addition, the last thing I want to do is support a show that is nothing more than glorifying a bunch of worthless millionaires.

What would be said if there was televised geek/computer awards ceremony and Bill Gaits was the winner. There would be lawsuits, Dept. of Justice inquires and protests. Why we put these people up on a pedestal is beyond me.

To me almost everything about life is a joke. Almost nothing is real. Behind almost everything there's a profit motive, an attempt to addict me to some form of money extractor. Once people entertained each other for free just by being there. Almost our whole life has become a commercial comic strip. We watch the matrix in awe because we are in its grip. Even now you are turning into an Agent to eliminate my intrusion into your nonreality.

i did'nt watch the grammy's. personally i hated most of the musicians on there. but norah jones does have talent. whether i like the music or not she is very talented. i think she deserved it.

lets face it folks, whether you are a rap or a rock fan, both genres of the music SUCK now. it opens the doors for other music to come in and compete. Who can compare the rap of today to Run DMC, the beastie boys, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, etc. etc.? Who can compare the Rock of today to U2, Metallica, Pearl Jam, etc. etc.?

Its not even the grammy's fault, its our fault. We buy stupid music and perpetuate stupid music.

I think all award shows are a joke.

They are fun to watch sometimes though just to see the famous people outdo each other in style and how little they can wear and get away with

It's all about whose careers the RIAA choose to stand behind. All these award shows tend to focus everyone's attention on a few (often mediocre) artists who are the "flavas of the month", so that more people will purchase their CDs.

I blame teenagers since they buy the majority of the 'popular' music. :D The last CD I bought was Creed's first album. Prior to that, years went by without buying an album.

I don't think I've ever watched an awards show for more than a few seconds. Yup, worthless.

It's about the best overall music, not who is the most overplayed artist on pop radio stations. Eminem's music as a whole can't touch Norah Jones, regardless of how many #1 songs either of them has (I have both of their CDs)

Do you have a link or something to back that up? Or did ya just pull it out of thin air? :)

Because, if it's true, I wonder why the soundtrack for O' Brother Where Art Thou won last year. Certainly this didn't happen because the RIAA secretly wants people to start listening to more bluegrass.

it is mostly teenagers faults. and young people in general. i'm guilty of jamming to Blink 182. But hey, what else do they play these days? its all Clear Channel now. I have little choice, its gotten to the point of picking the better of two evils.

I pretty much pulled that out of my ass, referring to award shows in general as opposed to focusing on the Grammys. It does make sense, even if there are some rather obvious exceptions. Where, for example, is the entire genre of electronic music?

I think the popular/mainstream categories are a joke..

However I did catch the NY symphony play the song from West side story (I played a Jet in my HS play)
Though musicals are essential, they are not to be played by a full blown orchestra (they should have at least played Haydn) That was enough for me, and scores from movies is all I care about. I am a heavy metal fan, but these days... there's no heavy metal to listen to or watch on tv. TV blows these days, I don't even know why I have cable anymore I barely watch it.

Granted the Grammy's are not based on record sales but they would never ever award a guy like Eminem with the song, album or record of the year award because all of the people in the academy are 90 year old closed minded individuals. Regardless of the way it is done record sales should figure into the Grammy's. If a guy puts out 4 #1 hits on an album obviously he is doing something right.

And as far as Eminem winning awards yes he won Rap awards not any of the major awards.

Bellboy: Here's your champaign.
Homer: (no money) Here. (gives him grammy).
Bellboy: Wow! An award Statue....oh....its a grammy. (throws over balcony)
Guy outside: Hey! Don't throw your garbage down here!

Homer: Why can't I win anything?
Marge: You won a grammy.
Homer: I mean an award that matters.
Disclaimer: These opinions do not reflect the interest of Fox Broadcasting, who don't consider the grammy an award at all.
