POLL: Who thinks People who call Computers CPU's

Simple poll, Who here thinks that people that call computers CPUs should be allowed to own a computer. Presonally That is one of those things that I absolutly hate is to see someone call a computer a cpu. I had one guy say that Computer = cpu because computer is ComPUter.. Finnally I just told him it is like refering to your car as the engine. "Mom im going to drive the engine to school today." Anyways on to the poll.

I've noticed most people over the age of 45 call them modems or hard drives. *sigh* Makes it really fun when they're ordering an upgrade or a new part for their system.

I don't agree with limiting what people can own, especially for such a stupid reason. No one is the master of everything. I mean, how many people really know which parts of a car engine are which? These people didn't grow up with computers. They're new to them, and most of them can get by.

Who cares what they call the computer?

But many people know what and where the engine is, as well as the trunk and tires .

He isnt asking them to decode hex or memorize irqs

i think over the years, the term CPU has expanded to cover both the processor itself and the beige box.

so its ok, theres one definition, and one connotation. nothing wrong with that imho

My grandma calls the computer the hard drive. She calls the monitor the TV.

Following this logic, it's also OK to call a refrigerator a "Food," a camera a "lens," and a car an "engine".

Dude.. quit over analyzing every damn thing. Most people don't even know what the heck a CPU is, yet they depends on it for their livelyhood. Just because they're ignorant of the technology or terminology doesn't mean they can't use it. Blame society for the name calling, because if you look at most popular publications, they're calling it the same darn thing. So do you call your "printer" a print device or printer? Can I take the "printer" away from you now?

With that being said, like some have pointed out, you shouldn't be allowed to own half of the stuffs you have because you don't know how to name certain things. Big :roll:

Actually, years ago the box was regularly called the CPU.

it is accurate to call the box part of a computer (not the entire computer) the CPU as that's where the processing is handled. the keyboard, mouse and scanner would function as inputs and the monitor and printers would funtion as outputs.

is the CPU necessarily the same as the Processing CHIP?? no. it's semantics that is just now being firmed up. i'm willing to bet that the box would eventually commonly be referred to as the CPU. get used to it.
