POLL: Who played the Guild Wars Beta?

I hate MMORPG's.

Nothing will ever make me pay to play a game that I already paid for. It's quite moronic. (And no, I'm not trolling, so don't bash me about how WoW makes your pants tickle so it's worth the money...that's not what this is about).

But Guild Wars doesn't require a monthly fee, so I decided to take place in this weekend's Beta test...and let me just say....wow. I love it! The game is gorgeous, plays well, and has a nice storyline. I can't wait until it comes out!

Anyone else play this weekend?

I played in the one they had in October, but it really just didn't hold my interest. Too me, it just felt like another Diablo or Duneon Siege spin-off, and I'm not much of a fan of either.

It's a nice concept, but I'm afraid GW will be dominated by WoW, who will have the userbase locked down by the time GW hits the stores early next year.

Kind of, are you saying the only game you will play is GW? I find that hard to beleive.

Getting into MMOs keeps me away from spending $$ on games that would cost me ~50 for 10 hours of play

I heard GW was amazing at E3, i've heard only bad things other then this post about it since then.

If you get hooked on GW you will end up paying just as much. Instead of a monthly fee, I read in PCGamer, they are going to have an expansion pack about every 6 months that you will be paying for (if you get hooked that is).

No, it's not the only game I'll be playing...but I'll be playing it over WoW...which means I won't continue to pay people I've paid.

Here are a few previews I found...they seem rather excited.

And let me say...holy crap...take a look at this screen. I know it's not HL2 or D3...but I'm impressed.

I have alot of hope for Guild Wars and have enjoyed the two previews. (didn't play the beta this weekend) I've never liked MMORPGs, but GW is a good concept and executed well. Sure, it's not a full persistant world like WoW, but it doesn't have to be. It's also a MMORPG with no monthly fee, optional and frequent expansions, a beautiful engine/world, and a team from Blizzard that knows what they're doing. (the guy who balanced StarCraft is balancing the game)

It's really too bad most of my friends are playing WoW, though it's the only MMORPG out right now that I think is probably worth $15 a month.

[rant]GW is not an MMO, it's not comparable to MMO's, it has no monthly fee because it's not an MMO, the dev team does not call it an MMO, the website says it's not an MMO, STOP CALLING IT AN MMO.[/rant]

All the people I hear that play it say they are addicted. I played it for about 10 minutes in Seattle at PAX. I have that nifty content disc that you get for pre-ordering, but I got it at PAX. I also have a Guildwars t-shirt and a very cool poster. You'd think I was a fanboi, but as I said. I've played it for 10 minutes.

It is more or less like Diablo, but you have to remember. These people built battle.net, they worked on Diablo, and the community manager worked on diabloii.net. This is what they know and do. But Guildwars is a lot more than Diablo ever was and ever will be.

Another company that is filled with ex-blizzard employees is Flagship Studios. These guys are the real Diablo creators though, and their new game will undoubtedly have a lot more diablo feel to it. From the concept art I'd think it a game set in the present or future, but it seems to be filled with demons. Hell on earth it looks like. One guy had a sword in one hand and a gun in the other. Not sure if I dig it, but we'll see.

I for one never liked and probably never will like anything Blizzard makes. They are always late to the game, stealing ideas from other games and just marketing them better to steal the show. They didn't even make Diablo, the only game with the blizzard logo I ever liked. These guys running Flagship were doing Diablo before Blizzard bought them, I think they were called Condor back then. If you notice the openings of Diablo don't say blizzard but rather Blizzard North, which is what Condor was renamed too after blizzard entertainment bought them.

To be honest, it IS part MMO. (it fits the description) However, I don't mind not calling it an MMO because it probably shouldn't be compared to the others in that market.

Agreed...they are very, very clear that it is NOT a MMO b/c you don't have a monthly fee. But that's really the only big difference and the MAIN reason why they won't call it that. Everything else about the game makes it a MMO.

Either way...the beta's now officially ended and I've got another month to plan w/my guild and build my strategies....mmmmm....guild wars.....yummy

Well, it is pretty far from MMO. All they did was take diablo and turn battle.net chatrooms into 3d towns. You go from these 3d towns to instanced peer to peer quests.

And your "moronic" comment in your original post IS flamebait.
