Poll: Who can help me get started?

I was thinking of starting SETI and joining at hardware central, but I looked at the message board there, and decided to come to anandtech and check out if there was a team.
I read through some posts here and came away with more questions than answers.
From a post I saw here, different computers can do different tasks with varying degrees of efficiency. Is it better to concentrate on one DC task, or to put each computer to the task it is best at? Am I correct in remembering that I need to install the client and complete a WU before I join a team?
my system: athlon classic @ 700, I don't want anything running when I am gaming, surfing, burning, or sleeping (computer fans are too loud) but there is 10 hours a day that I am doing none of those.

As soon as I run CAT5 to my daughters room (by the end of the week, or sooner) , there is a Celeron @ 550 that is available another 10 hours a day. I also have enough parts for a 486DX 100 that can run 24/7 in my basement and I have a spot next to my hub and router picked out for it. Would this be of any use? I hope to run Linux on it, I have a linux CD that I've never tried to install. I may be able to get a K6-2 350 with case and mobo, I have an ISA vid card and a HD, I'll have to scrounge up a NIC and swap the monitor and keyboard with the 486, but that could run 24/7 also.

So, who can make any sense out of what I'm asking? Who can offer me advice on getting started?

Feel free to post here or PM me.
Thanks,
Dan

I can't get into too much detail, as the wife is about to bump me off the PC. I too need to run some cat5 upstairs so she and my daughter can get access to the printer and 'net without having to use MY pc. 😉

As to which project, it comes down to personal preference, and there are several approaches.
1. Do whichever project you have a passion for
2. Set your PCs to do whichever project they are best suited for
3. "swap" your PC CPU cycles with someone, for instance you are doing RC5 but have a K6, so you run OGR for someone who has a comparable Pentium that will run RC5 for you.

And you are already on the right road, most of us get into it and start putting together every PC we can scrape together to run. 🙂

Also, check out the Klinux threads, great proggy, all you need is Mobo/CPU, P/s, Floppy, some mem (not much) a NIC, kybd, and monitor. Easy to setup and easy to use. 😀

Welcome to the team, and happy "cracking"! 😀

Well, you've come to the right place for pretty much any Distributed Computing project, since we are very competetive in just about any project we participate in, and people here are always willing to help in any way they can.

(I have to preface my comments with a disclaimer that I'm a SETI guy, so I'll try not to be 'biased'.. 🙂 )

Your Athlon would do very well at any of the projects, but would be best suited to either RC5 or SETI.

The 486 would be VERY slow at either SETI or OGR, and somewhat useful at RC5.

The K6-2 is by far best suited to OGR.

You could reasonably run all systems on the same project if you want to consolidate, or participate in several projects to maximize your productivity with those systems, or you can even go to our CPU trading thread here and have your systems run their best projects for someone else while the other person has their computer run your chosen project for you...

In order to join a team in RC5 or OGR, you have to have completed and 'flushed' some work first, but you can join the SETI team as soon as you join the SETI program.

For more information on our SETI team and how to join, go here.
For more information on the RC5 team, go here.

Since I originally came here to do SETI, I downloaded the client and started running it. As I planned not to run it when I was using the computer, I set it to run only as a screen saver, Watched the pretty picture for about a minute 😉 and went to join the team. When I was done I couldn't stand it not doing anything while I was on the computer, so I changed my setting to have it always run...to my surprize, it didn't slow my system down at all! I can't even tell it's running. I'll probably turn it off when I game game, but I'm gonna try leaving it on when I burn and see what happens. I'm sure you guys all know how painless this is, but I expected to take a hit in performance.
By the end of the week, I'll have the celeron doing RC5, and maybe the 486 by the end of next week I'll have the 486 on line too.

Is RC5 as easy to set up as SETI?

Once I have a feeling for which one I like better, I can pick one and maybe trade CPU cycles with someone. It may be a couple of weeks before I can get a feel for what kind of productivity I can expect. Is there an enthusiasm here for trading?

It'll be at least 3 weeks before the K6 comes online. Then I'll have a go at OGR.

Thanks to RaySun2Be, Fardringle, and viztech for the welcome.

The guy from the Green Bay state, oh, sorry, home
of the cheeseheads. Don't know why you folks don't
turn into popsicles up there, I spent three years in
Chicago, and that was bad enough.

Welcome aboard, hang out a bit, learn alot, and glad
to have you in the fold. And thanks for stopping in,
we sure could use your help.

Oh, and watch out for the Borg from Seattle, they like
to assimilate everything in sight (hey, Kent is a
suburb, right next to the home of UPS-Second and Main).
And even more importantly, watch out for a Borg with
white fibers (dental floss) hanging out his ears, comming
from the brain housing group, he might sneak in from the
north and get you in the middle of the night (he likes to
disguise himself as permafrost, the white fibers give him
away during a full moon). Just kidding, hang around and
have some fun.

Well, he hasn't scared me half as much as I've scared my wife talking about this 😉

Thanks Russ & Jarhead for the welcome.

I think I am turning into a popsicle! I'd like nothing better than to move to Vegas. I love the Packers, but I can do without the stupid cheeseheads people wear😱

Welcome to the TeAm SpookyFish 😎

<< When I was done I couldn't stand it not doing anything while I was on the computer, so I changed my setting to have it always run... >>

Oh man you've walked right into the big "trap" 😉 Soon you'll be running all your systems 24/7 too 😎

<< to my surprize, it didn't slow my system down at all! I can't even tell it's running. >>

That's the great part, none of the distributed computing clients slow you down at all (if your system isn't really old that is, which yours isn't😉)

<< I'll probably turn it off when I game game, but I'm gonna try leaving it on when I burn and see what happens. I'm sure you guys all know how painless this is, but I expected to take a hit in performance. >>

I leave it on when I game (seti at my main comp) and seti is the most demanding of the distributed computing clients... all the others run at even lower priority. I never notice anything when gaming, burning or doing what not, but the client usually doesn't get any work done while doing those things ... hence I try not to game too much 😉 (/me is hooked BADLY😉)

Anyway, good to have you with us if there is anything we can assist you with let us know and we'll fall all over eachother trying to answer 😎

With love and respect your fellow TA member

<Well, he hasn't scared me half as much as I've scared my wife talking about this>

LOL, I can relate. 😉

RC5 is easy to set up. A coupla hoops more to jump through to join the Team than SETI, but still fairly easy. 🙂

"Tuefelhunden"
"Belleau Wood is the site of one of the greatest, but costliest victories in U.S. Marine Corps history, until WWII. The action stopped the last major German offensive of the war. Following the battle the wood was officially renamed Bois de la Brigade de Marine in honor of the Marines who fought and died there. Subsequent to the battle, German veterans of the battle nicknamed the Marines who fought there Tuefelhunden("...for they fought like dogs straight from the depths of hell&quot😉, or
Devil Dogs, a term which is still used by Marines today."

Just trying to build up the camaraderie around here.

"Those men on the line were my family, my home. They
were closer to me than I can say, closer than any friends
had been or ever would be. They had never let me down,
and I couldn't them. I had to be with them, rather
than let them die and me live with the knowledge that
I might have saved them. Men, I now knew, do not fight
for flag or country, for the Marine Corps or glory or any
other abstraction. They fight for one another. Any man
in combat who lacks comrades who will die for him, or for
whom he is willing to die, is not a man at all. He is truly
damned." -William Manchester

SpookyFish

Welcome to the team 😀
BTW on my fathers PC I run SETI whilst burning CD's (on a Yamaha IDE)& never had problems 🙂

Welcome to the team SpookyFish.🙂

BTW I run seti all the time, even when I burn CD's & game. I have never had any problems.🙂

I guess the only thing I might add is that there is a text client of SETI you might eventually want to get ahold of to reduce the work unit processing time... that is, after you and your friends have had their fill of the graphical interface version ! I'm new at it too... but doing alright 🙂

Take care,
