i know you didn't want your friend to be flamed, but who in their right mind would think that "bastard" is worse?

tell her to go in the middle of a crowded room and say each word to see what kind of reaction she gets.

no i dont mind if you flame her for what she thinks. i said dont flame her for not liking cuss words. flame away for all i care...i personally think she is mildly retarded for not being able to tell the obvious correct choice here.

We have all been conditioned not to say the n-word because its "racist". Its not necessarily a cuss word. Bastard on the other hand I dont really consider a cussword either but atleast its also not considered racist.

A better question is should "cracker" be replaced with a more offensive term. I'm tired of having a crappy racial slur

Depends on who its said to. And who is calling the name. If you are a white person and you call a black person a ni@@er then you are probably going to get someone mad, and so it should be. But if you are black and do it then its fine(seems to be atleast).

If you call someone a bastard and they really are(under the meaning of it) then you should expect to get the same insult back from that person.

The "N" word is a Racist term

The "B" word can be applied to any race therefore the "N" word is much worse IMHO

According to one thread posted a few weeks ago here, saying N***er will get you fired. IIRC, the thread was some African-American woman at the poster's work said it on her cell phone and it was overheard by her coworkers. She was clearing out her desk later that day.
I think if I called someone a bastard they might get peeved but it's not all that much of an insult.

I don't consider either to be "worse" than the other as they're just words. However, calling someone a n!gger is MUCH less socially acceptable, and a lot more likely to get you punched in the face. It also makes you look like an ignorant, backwards redneck from Alabama. Bastard, on the other hand, isn't even a swear word and hasn't been for some time. It's a South Park joke that's about equally as offensive as "Timmah!" and "Cheesy-poofs".

so a black woman got fired for saying the N word? i guess its good that it is unacceptable for anyone to say it, as well it should be. i think you guys are making extemely valid points and im glad this is something everyone agrees on. black or white, no one should be put down specifically because of their color, and its worse that my friends dont even realize what they are saying could be so hurtful. they are ignorant to a lot of stuff, and that is tolerable and acceptable as some people are, but when it comes to peoples personal feelings, there are no excuses.

i suppose bastard was a bad word, way back when there weren't too many fatherless kids around, and was a "strong" negative word. now a days i particularilly dun see such stigima attached to it.

as for the other word in question i dun think it should be used by anyone, but erm if you really feel like pissing people off go ahead and use it. getting flamed on should be the least of their worries while getting a beat down.

but then again, the issue seems to be offending strangers by shouting out a certain word. esp around certain group of people. now if your female friend can say that word without a problem in front of black people then that's not an issue, but what are the chances? tell your friend to grow up a bit and see how the world works.

Neither.

They are words.

The problem is what people associate with the words and, IMO, that's the person's own fault for being offended by their own association.

yeah, saying bastard is just a little rude and will maybe get some looks if you say it loud enough. the big N word will get you in a lot more trouble and is generally considered a "worse" word. but im not sure if i would call it a curse becuase its really just a slur. bastard is so generic and, although it has a very specific definition, that has fallen out of common usage while N is still very, very specific.

I voted for N....er to worse because when you say "B...stard" you are insulting one person as opposed to N...er which insults the whole race.

I say bastard. It can apply to anyone. It's just lost its effictiveness, no one takes offence to it nowadays.

N*gger, though, is just for one group. Call a white or asian N*gger they'll just consider you mental and probably move away. It only applies to blacks. Of course not if you're black yourself. We've all seen blacks call other blacks that with no anomosity at all, and sometimes as a term of endearment. It's this kind of double standard and limited application that kills it for me.

Your GF has some strange morals, MrDudeMan. What part of the world you two in? Southern US?

-- Jack

Hating something is too much work to do. What you want to do is ignore something. It is more effective.

first of all, my girlfriend had nothing to do with this. secondly, why does it matter where i am from? i grew up all over the country. i have what i would call a normal set of morals. i respect everyone until they give me a reason not to, but that has nothing to do with this conversation.

in your terms, i would agree that bastard is worse, but that isnt realistic. you cant call anyone a n*gger because what if they were dating a black person? or friends with one, or best friends with one, or married to one, etc. if you call someone a bastard that actually fits the description, i can see how that could be worse, but id say you have a much better chance of offending someone yelling n*gger than you do yelling bastard. id be willing to be there are more black people than people that meet that qualifications to be a bastard.

the worst would be to call someone a n*gger bastard, so lets hope no one does that no matter which you think is worse!

MrDudeMan let's take your friend to the proverbial "other side of the tracks" and leave her all alone in a crowd and let her discover for her own enlightenment which word gets the most reaction. My God she's not only racist but stupid.

I wonder if the OP has the guts to run a poll like this in person.

He/She doesn't have the guts to even fully type one of the words behind the security of the internet.

yeah i told her to look at it from a different perspective, but that was too mentally stimulating and i decided to try something else to get her to understand.
