ClarkConnect based on RH is a nice server OS. Lightweight, FREE DNS service! Web based management.

You get a (yourID).pointclark.net domain for free. Your server will update the IP add for the DNS entry when it changes.
 
For router or server duty I prefer NetBSD or FreeBSD, Linux or not it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, just more secure and more reliable.

I am a big fan of debian but apt-get install does not have the latest stuff for libraries etc. Now I'm using redhat on my second machine. I find it is slower than debian but installing latest libraries is a lot easier.

Would there be repositories that I can included in sources list with the latest libraries etc.?
 
If you use Debian sid it's a lot more recent, but I still don't see why people need to have everything as soon as it's released and the stuff in sid has always been "new enough" for me.
 
Debian is for those that want stuff that works > stuff that is newest.
Gentoo is for those that want stuff that works < stuff that is newest.

Gentoo rocks, but is tempermental. Debian is cool because it's so damn well designed. Apt-get is da-bomb, but Gentoo's method of compiling from source is what is going to be most usefull in the future (starting in a couple years). I don't know if they could get portage good-enough as apt, but maybe some other distro will perfect the system.
 
The problem has nothing to do with binary packages vs source, it's QA and consistency. Debian packages require more work and are slower to get into the system because they integrate well with the system and there are a lot of rules to follow.

No, they aren't. You are not understanding something rather fundamental to linux here. All the distributions you list are the SAME Operating System. They run the linux kernel, which contains the firewalling and routing capabilities. EVERY single last one of the distros you list has the exact same feature set when it comes to routing, NATting, firewalling, etc.. Some may by default include a gui for managing firewall rules, but that doesn't make it 'better' at being a router, it merely makes it easier to config, which has little to do with how well it does its job.

By my definition, easy to set up features, make it better than something that has the same features, but harder to setup. Not applicable to all cases, but as they`ve all the same OS at the core, it applys.
BTY. Do you have some sort of problem with me? Cos for some reason, there have been instances in this thread where you seem to be really stuck up about several of my comments. If you arnt, then im just checking, if you are, then would you kindly explain why?

 
Gentoo. Portage is great, compiling from source is great, updating your system is easy, Gentoo > *. I tried Debian, I didn't like it.

Through my experience here in Nashville, TN, through local linux conventions, the overwhelming majority of Debian users are old, fat, smelly people. I've now applied that generalization to all Debian users. They don't scare me. 😉

Through my experience here in Nashville, TN, through local linux conventions, the overwhelming majority of Debian users are old, fat, smelly people. I've now applied that generalization to all Debian users. They don't scare me. 😉

Yea, but Nashville is different. We're a haven for normal people. You won't find many rednecks in Nashville, unless they migrated in from outlying towns. Nashville's population is mostly skinny to average size, with drops of large splashed in. (And all us Gentoo users are of normal weight 😉)

AH! I didn't mean all Gentoo users, just the ones that are in Nashville and attend the Linux conventions. I should have specified that. 🙂
