POLL: Which is the better band? Weezer or U2?

Though Joshua Tree was the first foray into "pop", it was not their best album IMO. War and Unforgettable Fire will always be my favorites.

Boy and October had some great tracks, but lacked the full album feel of War. You can really hear their youth in these albums, the musical and lyrical content is very good, but still ruff around the edges.

War and Unforgettable Fire were whole albums, having a consistent feel and a very refined U2 sound.

The Joshua Tree also felt "whole", but was a lyrical departure for U2. Great album nontheless.

Rattle and Hum was, well, interesting. Has some good tracks, but is more of a hardcore U2 fan album then mainstream.

Zooropa, Achtung Baby, and Pop have some good tracks as well, but much of the U2 quality had been lost.

All that You Can't Leave Behind is somewhat a return to pre-Joshua Tree days. The musical part is mostly Joshua Tree, but the lyrical content returns to the more social/political theme from Boy-Unforgettable Fire.

I really like U2, they're the 80's equivalent to the 60's Stones. Weezer won't be anything in a few years, as we'll see. 🙂
 
I think you're all missing the real point... Which is a better band... Pointer Sisters, or Slayer? Oh yeah... I give my vote to the Mc Donald's commercials where they sing with Rondald.
 
While I've gotten completely hooked on Weezer in the last couple months I don't think they're quite in the same league as U2. I do think they're extremely talented and original (something that's hard to do in today's age.) But unless they can step up to a whole other level for 15 years plus like U2 has then I just don't see the comparison being valid.
 
I think the both suck arse...U2 use to be good back in the day, but they blow now....and Weezer is just plain suckage
 
Weezer rocks, U2 makes pop krap now & churns out music aimed at the masses. Weezer has a really tight sound. They are amazing live, seen them twice.
 
While we're at it, let's compare The Beatles to Green Day! Or Jimi Hendrix to Ben Folds! Yea that's it!

LOL. ok, this is funny because weezer is not EVEN punk. and obviously you have never listened to weezer's cds because in every cd they have released they have reinvented themselves. every cd has a completely NEW sound that cannot be compared to other bands during the time they were released. since then many bands have tried to copy their sound.

Ok, before I go into this argument I would just like to say I've been a long time fan of U2 and of course weezer. one of the greatest songs of all time (in my opinion) is with or without you. But sorry, there is no U2 cd that i can listen to the whole way through without getting totally bored. There are only a handful of songs that I would consider GOOD by U2. weezer, on the other hand, i love every song, released or unreleased, that they do. that's why i'm "weezergirl" 😛

I think the reason U2 is winning in this poll is because they have been around longer. Obviously to all the old folks on this board weezer can't compare to U2 because they haven't had the time to establish themselves. But if I compared U2's first 3 albums to weezer's first 3 albums, weezer would win hands down. Who here can actually say they can listen to every single song on U2's albums and enjoy it? Sorry, but i'd be fallign asleep. I have talked to lots of U2 fans and even they agree, but if you talk to almost any weezer fan they will tell u every single song on weezer albums rock.

As for a money-making machine. I can pretty much say that weezer wins this one as well. their next album maladroit was already released in mp3 format on their official website, free for the taking. the album will not be officially released until april yet all of the final cuts of the songs were released by the band. Also, when their green album was released they did a free tour around the US, not because they have trouble selling tickets or needed to promote their new album but because they wanted to do something for the fans. devoted fans that had been waiting for YEARS for the next album to come out.

I don't really think the old folks on these boards truly understand the influence weezer has had on the music scene. Pinkerton is TRULY one of the best albums of the 90's. some even say they spawned the emo scene, which is debatable, but they have influenced tons of bands.

Anyways, I don't think just because every cd U2 puts out there's like 1 or 2 good songs makes them the BESt band. just because they have been around longer and are saved by a few gems on each of their records does not make them the BEST band. anyways, i gotta go now but maybe i will add on later.

No, U2 is better because they have stood the test of time. Time tends to betray the trendier, "flavor of the day" bands. The ones that stick around are generally the good ones.

Look at all the hair bands of the '80's. Dozens and dozens. Look at which ones are still playing, or have reunited because there was a demand for it. Very few, but those are the better ones.

Look at all the grunge bands of the early '90's. How many are left? Pearl Jam. Anyone else? Bueller? Bueller?
I'd even bet that if Cobain had lived, Nirvana would've faded out also, because their music, while entertaining at the time, was all the same, and would not stand the test of time. There is room for only so many AC/DC's. Funny how Nirvana was immortalized simply because he killed himself.

Now you have all the popular kinds of music we see today. Just wait about 10 years, and see who is still around.

U2 is great, Weezer is great. I voted Weezer, b/c though they haven't been popular since the stone age, their music has went every which way. U2's music is good(great actually), but they haven't experimented as much with different stuff. It's the same usuall "meaningful" song that becomes a big hit b/c it's U2. U2 is kind of pulling a "Metallica Effect"

Ok, I confess. I love weezer because blue was released at just about the right time for me and it was a great album. I dislike U2 from the standpoint that I have only heard their new music and I despise pop-sounding garbage.

I am only familiar with certain songs such as "Beautiful Day" and their last 4 years worth of pop hits that I didn't care for. Everybody raves about the 'good ole' days' of U2 and I am not familiar with this at all. I really would like to see what all the fuss is about.

Can somebody please provide me with a list of 'old school' U2 songs that are decent so I have something to make an informed opinion about. I already know weezer rules so there goes my vote 🙂, but you could win another potential fan.

U2 never did anything for me. I remember when Boy came out and I was nonplussed. And when War came out I swear I wanted to tear the radio out of my car whenever Sunday Bloody Sunday came on.

I always figured that U2 was popular not because they were good, but because the masses enjoy maladroit pablum.

And of course, U2 sued Negativeland which just proves that they are interested in maintaining the status quo instead of challenging people's perceptions.

I don't really know Weezer, but for me they win by default.
