The SP comes with an AC to DC adapter that is used to recharge the battery. I loaned mine to a friend during a car ride, and he played about 7 or 8 hours with the backlight on, and the low battery warning still didn't kick on. The internal battery is really great.

Is he cutting you a really good deal? You can buy it new for $100 w/ the adapter. Anyway, no, you cannot to go Radio Shack and get a new AC adapter for it. It has a propriatary connection, so you'll need to get a replacement from Nintendo. EbGames sells a 3rd party adapter, so you may be able to pick one up locally. However, if you are hard-core about it like I am, you'd get the Nintendo Officially Licensed adapter from Nintendo... If you are interested, simply go to store.nintendo.com and navigate through the site. You are looking for Parts and Accessories for a GBA SP. The adapter will run you $15 new, plus shipping. So I'd be sure that your friend is giving a hefty price break before you buy his used SP.

NP, happy to help. I think the GBA is a great little console. The backlight and rechargable battery were absolutely necessary. Plus, it is becoming the platform of choice for RPG and strategy based games. With all the re-makes of SNES games, you can pack up your old consoles.
EDIT: The deal he is giving you really is excellent. Can he not find his adapter? Even if you had to spend $20 to get one shipped from Nintendo, you are coming out way ahead.

yeah apparently he bought his gba sp without the adapter, if you know what i mean. i'll just by the one at EBX for $10. Does the GBA SP play older gameboy and gameboy color games? if they do, i can just sell my old school gray gameboy and gameboy color.
