I own three NEC DVD burners and they have all been excellent. I have never burnt a coaster on any medium I've used (CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD+R DL). I cannot comment on the other burners, but you would be happy with the NEC.

I bought a Sony DRU-800a last year and have been pretty happy with it. In fact, I picked up a DRU-810a today for my other computer system at Office Depot ($39.99) after $40 mail in rebates. The Sony comes with a white/silver (not beige) bezel and an all black bezel. I think the price is good through 6/24.

I think the sony is only available with a $20 MIR at OfficeDepot, shown here. But thanks for the input and welcome to the Forums!:D

"Weird Al Yankovic claims digital a raw deal for some artists" thats some tech site... ;)
Thanks for the links howard and galvanized. Normally I refer to pricegrabber.com, what's your opinion on them?

seems like the results are pretty spread out, no votes for the lite on yet, I'm actually leaning toward the beng for its bezel styling, lightscribe and single layer performance. It's also very good at cd burning from what I hear as well, which is good b/c i burn lots of music cd's as well.

bought a Pioneer DVR-110D about three months ago. For some reason no matter what media i use i cannot get it to burn over 12X. I am using Nero 7 premium edition now (upgraded form Nero 6 ultra) and I still have the same issue. 12X is still pretty fast but I'd like to get the full speed out of my drive. I would return it but with return shipping and restocking fee it is costs about the same to get a whole new drive. i am not saying this model is bad, just giving my experience. hope it helped.

NEC because of its great burning ability (no coasters), flashable firmware, ease of use, and different colors (beige, silver, black), and its CHEAP!

did u update the firmware?

I have 2 pioneer burners, the 110D and the 111D and both of em are doing fine, my old pioneer single layer dvd burner is still doing great in my bros comp. My 110D was playing up burning untill i updated the firmware on it, now it fine (was making coasters at higher burning speeds)

I would say NEC because I've had good experiences with them in the past. I've heard the BenQs are also reliable.

I would be wary of the LITEONs. I got one recently and it skips while playing DVDs and sometimes gets grainy. Granted they are scratched Blockbuster ones, but my other LITEON in the same computer (DVD/CD Reader, no burner) plays them fine.

I would go with the NEC. I know the Lite-On sux, it crapped out on my dad's machine a few months after we bought it.

I haven't updated the firmware yet. i'll give that a shot. To tell you the truth i am not unhappy with the drive. not one coaster yet. It's just a little annoying watching that slider go across at 12X when all of my media has 16X clearly printed on it. With dual core and a ton-o-RAM my DVD rips take half the time they used to so this a a minor annoyance. :)

I have two of the NEC3550A burners in two of my systems, and have built two other rigs for other folks using the same burner. IMO, it's as close to perfect as it gets. Dual Layer, not picky about media, burn-proof, no coasters.
