UT all the way.

UT has gameplay.
Quake3 just has graphics.

UT
Pros: GAMEPLAY, best teamplay game I´v play'd, great levels, great online game finder inderface.
Cons: Unreal engine, could be faster.

Quake3
Pros: Graphics
Cons: the levels SUCK ASS, gameplay is lacking

I must be the worst ever at QuakeIII. I've been taking a stab at it every day for a week now and think I've gotten a grand total of 2 kills! Kinda strange because, back in the day, I was the man to beat when playing deathmatch DOOM.

If I was stranded on a deserted island with a computer and could only have one game it would be UT.

I have UT and ordered QIII. People seem to talk about QIII more.
Is there any way to see your FPS in UT?

Unreal Tournament, more diverse original gameplay IMO. CTF just plains kicks ass !!!!!!

I think I've voted in about four of these threads already. My vote is Quake 3, yet again. :)

(BTW is this a general hardware topic? The MODs will probably move it.)

Definetely Unreal Tournament! Way more interesting with ALL kinds of levels and ALL kinds of weapons. Btw, I think we all from AT should play each other sometime, it will be very interesting to see the results :p

Unreal Tournament!!!

Quake 3
-------

Positives
- Has a superior GFX engine by far, UT's engine looks dated compared to it
- GFX engine with full detail on is much faster, smoother and more consitent in FPS
- Diverse range of characters to choose from
- Deathmatch games are fairly decent

Negatives
- Maps are in general crap
- CTF in my opinion sucks in Q3, maybe the Team Arena add-on will change my mind.
- In a lot of cases I find the maps to dark in a number of areas
- Lack of weapon variety, what happened to the old BFG? :(
- I find that the guns kill you too quickly, the damage should be reduced.

Unreal Tournament
-----------------

Positives
- Excellent gameplay with a wide variety of different types of game, eg. Domination, DeathMatch, CTF, Assault etc.
- The Translocator, I feel naked without it :D
- Lots of weapons to use.
- Audio Taunts etc. I don't think I could ever go back to a game without audio taunting and other audio stuff. :)

Negatives
- GFX engine looks a little dated and struggles in open / complex areas.

I think that is about it...

well i cant say that i know much about Q3, but i have played it once at Babbage's. UT all the way!!! i must agree that framerates are generally better in Q3 than UT (at their respective resolutions). But the levels in UT are much better. game types (CTF, DM, team DM, Domination, etc.) kick ass. i play UT religiously, and the weapons rock! i'd sacrifice some framerates to play UT over Q3, b/c when you think about it, the framerates you end up sacrificing dont amount to any noticeable difference in gameplay (unless you are playing at some mad resolution such as 1200 x 1600).

and i agree with andrey...we should all get on a server and see how everyone fairs against each other. i can see it now...the headlines will read, "Team AnandTech enters the realm of Unreal Tournament...";)

UT is the choice for me, alot of awesome Mods out there.
only downside is you might require alot of downloads to join some of the games.
Q3 is just too boring for me

Btw, I have been hooked on counter-strike lately...might wanna give that game a test drive..very addictive

Quake 1! that was real deathmatch. the only thing that has been added since which is worthy is the rail gun (because unlike the mega damage weapons in UT, it actually requires skill to use).

UT, for the same reasons others have stated.

I have Q3, but it may as well be 3dmark for all I care and use it for. Sure, Q3 has some nice graphic effects, but they were poorly utilized in Q3.

i just cant seem to be used to physics/weaponry of q3... meanwhile thtat of UT feels 'just' right to me. weapon balance is another thing. in UT it is just as probable to get a dual enforcer headshots as getting a multi-rocket blast depending on the situation.. in Q3, what else could match bfg or RL? :( oh yeah maps suck big time too... i am not really into mods, my favorite maps include: ice zero station, conveyor, phobos moon, deck16, gothic, codex of wisdom (sometimes)
galleon blows tho

UT or Q3? HL and mods of course! First DM (mainly to learn the controls...), then TFC, then for a LOOOOOONG time CS and now FLF. The graphics are comparably crappy, but I don't really care for that. Gameplay is what counts.
