jagr10, who said consoles don't crash? They crash, believe me. I'll admit they're much more stable than most PC's but they do still crash.
And there's no way consoles are gonna eliminate pc gaming. Compete yes, eliminate, no.
Here's my take on the whole console thing right now...
Game cube is a really good, fast stable, nice looking system. I think it will do well, but something that's gonna hold it back is that is was designed and targeted more towards kids. Plus the standard unit doesn't play dvd's. That's crap.
PS2 is an excellent system. Power and looks wise, it and Xbox are very close. The problem with PS2 is that it's difficult to develop on. Plus I think Sony is screwing the pooch when it comes to marketing.
Xbox is very nice looking, and is supposed to be easy to develop for (accoring to the MS monkey at E3). Unless MS starts strong-arming the game industry (which they probably will) I think Xbox will actually help PC gaming. Porting code from PC to Xbox is very easy. The other way is a little more difficult (because of all the different hardware). We should see lots of games for both, except that MS doesn't want that. For example, Unreal Championship is coming out for Xbox, but MS is paying the makers bank to NOT port it to PC (straight from rep at E3). They'd better not do that with Halo. 🙁
All that said, I bought a PS2 because I think it's an excellent system, whose power is for the most part still untaped. Some really cool games will come out for it. Some really good games are already out for it (SSX is the sh!t). I'm a PC gamer at heart, so I'm not gonna buy every console that comes out. One is enough for me. However, if I had not bought a PS2, I would buy an XBox.
