Well, the thing is, I was in ROTC for my freshman year, and the quit because it was so lax and piss-poor. I didn't do anythign there. So I figure I'll do this thing and get it over with.

And I've just contacted the recruiter online - apparently, there's no officer recruiters around my area :(

If you want a career from what I've heard the Air Force is a lot harder to get promoted unless you've been a pilot(or maybe just any rated job). My recruiter told me that as an engineer it would be very unlikely that I'd be able to earn a promotion past O-5 (Lt. Col.) (O-5 probably isn't a bad career at all, but why limit yourself like that)

I don't know if the other branches are going to be as restrictive as that but I imagine at some point being a graduate of an academy/west point is a big factor.

Something to think about.

But since I'm fluent (read, write, and converse) in Korean, and can instruct in two styles of martial arts, I figure I'll either be in intelligence or a self-defense instructor. And after my active duty time, i figure I'll try to get back to school and get a higher degree. From the info that is given, which branch would I best suited to join, or should I reconsider and find a job like everyone else? And why?

Why don't you take ROTC and become an officer if you want to join the military...that would be better than being enlisted...just my two cents :)

I didn't read all of the replies but thought, I'd throw in my vote for the U.S. Coast Guard. You get ribbed by Navy guys but the Marines respect us for pulling them out of Guadal Canal. If you don't want the Coast Guard, I'd look at Air Force. Both the CG and AF have peacetime missions other than preparing for war.

Yeah. I'm seriously considering the Air Force since like I said I won't know if this will be my career or not - and anyhoo, I'd like to be in intelligence anyhoo so I think I'd have a better chance to move up to the ranks even if I decided it to be my career. You know, I never considered the coast guard as an option - nothing against them, I just never thought about them. Hmm.
