Saccharin tastes too bitter to me. Glucose/Sucrose is terrible for your health in too large of quantities as well (I'm an insulin-dependent diabetic, so it's even worse for me), and Aspartame can be tolerable, but only in the right product (it's decent in Fresca, IIRC).

Personally I prefer other substitutes with lower rankings on the glycemic index, like natural sugars (agave, honey, etc.), or substitutes like stevia.

I feel upset and cheated that I've not heard more about splenda before. I do recalling something about it but it's time to go buy some. So it tastes just like sugar? Sweet mary. We do eat WOW chips sometimes with Olean and we love them but talk about motor-oil dumps the next day! Also very expensive.

Not surprised that the US is slower getting Splenda as Kami said. I am still physically unable to find any fat free cheese here. I'm not saying it doesn't exist, but it's definitely hard to find because I haven't found it. Also other "healthier" things like whole wheat flour are all but impossible to find as well (found a small bag once in a pricey health store).

It doesn't have any nasty taste or aftertaste at all. It is more like the taste of raw sugar (restaraunts used to have raw sugar in the brown packets).

It measures the same as sugar, and doesn't break down when heated (you can bake with it).

Zero calories.

My Diabetes NP recommended it; now it's all I use. Even some of my (non-diabetic) friends use it because they like the taste.

"Made from sugar, so it tastes like sugar."

Splenda OWNS! It is still pretty pricey. If they could produce it as cheap as sugar, then it would be over.

Few companies have moved over to Olean (the fat that can't be absorbed), I think mostly because of the anal leakage thing, but are people likely to move to splenda for more foods? I sure wouldn't mind cranking through a snickers bar made out of olean and splenda. It would have about 20 calories in it from the protein only :)

Also known as sucralose, SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener was discovered in 1976 at the University of London. For the next 20 years, SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener was put through a thorough safety testing program. SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener has now been approved by the regulatory agencies of more than 50 countries, including the United States (1998) and Canada (1991). Today, millions of people around the world enjoy more than 400 foods and beverages with SPLENDA® Brand Sweetener.

That would explain why we haven't seen much of Splenda here in the States as compared to Canada.

Sugar isn't as bad as people make it out to be, there are other highly refined products that are just as bad or even worse, so if you are going to have a bagel, you might as well have some sugar with it....

Regarding sweeteners, i would not drink a softdrink that contains sweeteners, not because it is bad (for very few people, even smaller dosages of fenylalanin (an essential amino acid) can be very dangerous, but that goes for just about every substance on earth) but because it tastes absolutly horrible IMO.

And regarding karies and sugar, ANY carbohydrate that sticks to the teeth is worse (so forget bananas)...

Oh lord, don't get me started on Olean. I've got a couple health-concious roomates that LOVE the stuff.

Word of advice. If you get the beer munchies, hide the WOW! chips before you start drinking. Lots of beer + WOW! = pretty much unbearable stench the next day. Trust me, I know

My friend and his wife make a big deal about drinking only a certain kind of soft drink that is sweetened with natural fruit sugars, but then sit around in the evening and polish off a 12 pack of beer and a couple dozen cigarettes. I never did figure out why all of the concern about the sugars and none about sucking down all that poison.

FYI, I just found out that Hansen's Diet Sodas use Sucralose. Their Kiwi Strawberry is really good. :)
