DVD all the way... I don't buy movies on anything else (except for the occassional VCD).

It's a standard now, hell even Krogers and Winn Dixie rents them now. :)

VHS is more widespread still, but I think DVD is going to be the next standard. It will take over from VHS. Since I bought my Pioneer DVDRom in January I've bought 1 VHS cassette, and that only becuase it's not available on DVD. And guess what, it doesn't work. It's the last VHS i'll buy. I have a TV-wonder now for recording TV shows, so I doubt i'll even use VHS cassettes for that. In my opinion both VHS and VCRs are out the door in favour of DVD and Video Cap cards.

DVD is going to last a while. If it wasn't, there wouldn't be such aggressive advertising campaigns promoting the technology. Prices will continue to drop, too.

I'll never buy another VHS movie again!

Video's are still have a bigger market in the UK, but I think that will change soon thought.

What about C-3D in years to come?

I won't be getting a DVD drive (for my TV) untill it can COMPLETLY replace my VHS, which means it has to be a recordable DVD. I never rent movies, so i only record stuff from TV, and so thats all i'll be doing with it. A DVD drive that can't record is useless to me otherwise

I refuse to buy DVD's for the fascist CSS technology in which they are encrypted. I urge any self-respecting customer (lots of you are) to boycott this stab in your back by the MPAA.

VHS. When the DVD is as cheap as a VCR and it can record, then I will buy one.

office boy, piracy doesn't really solve the problem...you still end up paying the MPAA, thus sustaining DVD's popularity. (Not that I blame you).

On the other hand, I have zero compunctions against ripping the 3 DVD's I did buy, before I realized their evil. Bring on DeCSS.

Definitely DVD. The only thing I use my VHS for anymore is to watch Airheads and all the Star Wars movies.....only because they aren't on DVD....

I dont know if DVD's will last.

Right now, HDTV is comming out. A DVD has a max resolution of like 750x430 or something like that.

When you watch a DVD on an HDTV, do you not get black strips around the picture because the dvd cannot play at the resolution that the HDTV uses?

DVD is going to take over the rental front in a big way since almost
all DVD movies cost Blockbuster and other places little more than the
normal retail cost of $20-30 while every VHS copy costs roughly $70+.
When people start noticing that fewer and fewer shelves at the rental
shop house VHS movies they'll get the message that it's time to move
on.

I think VHS because they are more widely used. But once DVD's become recordable (ie. like a VHS) then it's gonna really catch on & replace the VHS.

I only watch movies on dvd. Its completely silly to watch them on anything else, video is totally inferior in terms of video/audio quality and lacks all that neato bonus material. I also love having the ability to choose which language i want to listen to or read(subtitles). Also, dvd's are pretty much always widescreen.. no lousy letter boxing.

I do think there is a still a place for VHS. For taping tv shows.. but thats about all its good for. Dvd players are dirt cheap now, and atleast in my area(silicon valley)tons of people own the players. Stores stock more dvd's then vhs movies now:) even discount stores like target.

Can't remember who asked, but dvd looks great on hdtv. It looks better on a hdtv then on a regular tv, thats for use. The format will last.
