Already got an athlon xp, so I got no reason to upgrade really until the Hammer. Even then, I might not, because I don't need that much horsepower...
 
Have a P4&DDR now, won't upgrade until 2.5Ghz becomes slow, then it'll prolly be another P4, maybe something like a P4 5Ghz&DDR2😀
 
Actually I don't like any of the choices....

1) The hammer may be too hyped...Until I see amd deliver a product on time I don't think that will be an option for my next upgrade...

2) thoruoghbred doesn't impress me...lacks any real substance like fsb change or added cache...

3)what about the p4b (true 533mhz cpus) and dual ddr boards??? That is likley what I am looking at ....maybe 2667 p4 with dual ddr-ram

Duvie, you need to vote for the fourth choice then.

As we don't know what the naming scheme will be for the 533 FSB P4's I have left it as 'A'. And Intel say naming schemes confuse the public...they should know.


 
i just built the rig in my signature, so i'm set for a while. however, trying to see into the future, i predict that i will be building whatever is faster between the hammer and the prescott in about 8-10 months (i'll probably put a new cpu in my current rig in about 4 months).

Well I will be upgrading sometime this year so I will have to go with an AthlonXP (whatever the fastest is when I upgrade). I will also be upgrading the mb to the MSI KT3 Ultra. Since Im going that far I will also be upgrading my video card (GF2 Pro) to a GF4 4200 (if I got the name wrong its the one that will be $150). Right now I have an Athlon1GHZ (oced to 1200mhz) running on an MSI KT266 pro mb. Its fast but I feel behind the times. Anyways, happy upgrading 😀
 
I'm probably not going to be upgrading either of my 1.4GHz T-bird rigs, since I'll be just fine with the horsepower I they afford for the next 9 months. Therefore, I'll wait and see how ClawHammer processors and boards work out.

If AMD can ship a 3.4GHz P4 equivalent ClawHammer by this year (and have it be on sale within a few weeks of that time), then I'd be very happy.
 
It's not an option in the poll but since I just built a Xeon box, my next platform will be the same box with a pair of 3 GHz 533 FSB Xeons at the end of the year. They are scheduled for release in Q3 so the price should drop by the end of the year.

I have seen many places call the new 533fsb northwoods p4b's....As for rdram I would sooner buy a VIA product!!!

Right now I run my memory at 400mhz+ ddr and get quite high memory bandwidth...imagine couple that with a true dual channel ddr and rdram may have met its match....
 
what's the prescott?

anyway, i'm excited about the hammer. any word on motherboard manufacturers/features for that processor yet? i know that amd has the solo 2 for it, but i'm curious to know what abit, asus, epox, etc. have up their sleeves... anybody know?
 
might want to add a choice for dual athlon mp? thats where im headed at the moment...just *might* wait and go dual hammer though.

For all those interested in ClawHammer, it appears SiS will announce their the SiS755 ClawHammer chipset in Q3, meaning at the latest the very last day of September. Link

Assuming the SiS755 gets announced in September, that could very well mean that boards based on this chipset will be out within a month or two of the announcement. 😀
