I friend of mine used to work at a hotel and I guess 20oz sodas were available in the dining area. At the time, Sprite was doing a promotion on collecting bottle caps to win $5,000. So after the meals, he would take off all of the caps and hopefully win something. As it turned out, he collected the winning caps and mailed in the necessary stuff to Pepsi? (Which makes Sprite). It took like 6-8 months to get the check, and the mailman delivered it by hand to his front door.
The downside was, after taxes it was only like $3,000 (Although Im not entirely sure if they taxed $5K or not, I don't remember), and his parents ended up taking most of it for no reason. With the money left over, I think he blew it all on drugs and alcohol for a big ass party that night...
