I borrowed a IBM 60GXP from a friend and it is very quiet to me. I might buy one in a few months.🙂

ok

Samsung and fujitsu added

what else am I missing?

also, where's a good place to buy these drives??

I came across a 40 GB 5400 rpm IBM at onvia for $110. Good deal??

How is Quantum generally on quietness? I'm asking because I have a Quantum 30 gb hdd and it sounds like a toilet flushing. 😉

Sal

western digital is amazingly quiet.
my friend has 4 WD drives and you can barely hear them humming away.

maxtors are pretty queit too, but they aren't very reliable.

I have a Fujitsu ATA66 7200rpm drive. Sorry forgot their cryptic model number. It's very quiet compared to many others that I've used.

I really can't tell unless I stick my head in the case and press my ear against the HD cage due to my many fans and HO Delta fan, and I've only use 1 older Seagate, 1 older WD, 1 fairly new Xpert WD, and 1 IBM 75GXP. But, I'd say the IBM is the quietest of the bunch (incidentally it's the fastest too).

The English-language Russian site, Digit Life, has reviews of several drives and subjective noise evaluations. They're among the many that have rated Fujitsu quiet, but they also had good things to say about a Samsung drive, not only for noise but also speed (not that I would ever buy one).

<< anyway, my drive is dead silent. >>

Yes, I guess dead ones are the quietest around 😉

Maxtor 7200 rmp quiet, IBM 60GXP also. (not 75GXP, which is not very noisy, but not very quiet either)

I use IBM HHDs and one Seagate and they are both pretty quiet IMHO, btu I think teh IBM one is quieter on the whole. I ahve my case off my machine to keep it extra cool if you will and I can barly ear it, so with the cover on you woudl probably not hear it.

This is personal experience,

Hope this helps,

Albert.
