I had some old K6-2 parts laying around so I decided to make a computer out of all the spare junk today. The motherboard I used was based on the Ali M1541 A1 chipset. I got Windows XP installed and when I went to do Windows update, it would not work. Now I've run into this problem in the past, with an i815e chipset based bored(abit st6), and I was never able to fix it despite many ideas by users on this forum. I honestly feel I've found a problem with the OS, in that alot of older motherboards are not supported and because of this, have update problems. Every up to date motherboard I've used has NEVER ONCE had this update issue, and I build ALOT of computers every month. Every time I try and do a Windows update on these 2 older chipset machines, Windows update tells me there are no current updates available, which we all know is not true. I've installed the OS on these computers with and without a connection to the internet so saying windows has already download all the updates is simply not the case. If you have or dont have this issue with older motherboards, please post which older motherboard you are using, and if windows update works on it or not.

turned alot of features down

couldn't wait to get home to my XP1600+ system though

Built an older K6-2 333 MHz system (BioStar MB, I think) for a neighbor kid and that did just fine, abeit a bit slow w/XP PRO. Very important to get MB drivers loaded in the beginning though. Get them directly from the Mfg website.

I could never find mobo drivers for the i815e chipset for windows XP, the cd would not let me load the drivers, and intel and abits site had nothing for the chipset. I thought you didn't need motherboard drivers with XP though(their are so many it already has) I must be wrong. Guess its time for a driver quest , fun fun

As to the drivers for the i815e chipset, I did a "quicky" google search and found a couple of possibilities. I found the graphic drivers here. I also think I possibly found the chipset installation utility on this page. Anyway, see if they help. You could also try drivers.com for a look.

Already tried these, got a blue screen and had to format the HD after installing them.
