Two things jump out at me:

1) $625US for a 16MB EDO SIMM. I traded in a couple of smaller sticks to get the price down, but nonetheless the price seems outrageous today.

2) $250 for Hercules Thriller 3D 8MB PCI video card, w/ the Rendition v2200 chipset. That card never panned out to the card it was originally envisoned to be. However, even today it has 2D quality that is probably only beat by the Matrox cards.

$2900 for my first pc hyundai 286 with 640K, but a 386 was $8000+ and the most expensive perpheral was a USR Dual Standard external modem for $535

Paid about $500 at Best Buy for one of the first, if not the first, 3x CD-ROMs. I can't remember the brand (NEC rings a bell)...but I was so cool with a 3x when everyone else had a measly 2x!

Oh! and my first 21" monitor. paid too much for that. $1200 for the Viewsonic P817. Unreliable piece of err.r..... but it has a nice high resolution (2048x1536).

i've only been buying pc parts for 2 years, so...
fUnc 1030 mousepad - $20 + shipping = $30
128mb ram for 160 10 months ago.. now costs 30

most expensive single iten was Slot A Tbird 800 Mhz for $270.

on the other side of things, i bought 2 15" dell trinitron monitors for $20 each.. 🙂

My Viewsonic P815 Monitor about 4-5 years ago. Paid $1400 for it!!! But it's the only thing other than my burner that's still being used for my new computer.

PC parts were as expensive as hell in general back in the olden day.

You had to spend $200-$300 for some good parts. Nowadays, you can get a fast processor for $150 and a good HD for also $150.

*Educated guesses here, I'm young.

Anyway, the most I spent was just recently on the Dell 20% deal. $430 for the Sony G420S 19" monitor. Ooooohhhh baby, I can't WAIT until I get it!

My dad bought two 2mb simms for $400 and a cd-rom (quad speed: high rollin'!) for $300 *back in the day* to upgrade our 486. heh.

I paid $295 for an HP-25 calculator (76 or 77 I believe)..... It was (and still is) programmable. Still works great!!!! RPN Rocks!
