Depends on the driver.. but I think manuals tend to be a bit faster, all else being equal.

Manuals tend to be faster with a skilled driver, though I believe that many drag racers will use an auto (especially in older cars), preferring reliability (in the sense of reproduceability) over the speed difference.

Also, it should be noted that manuals are also technically faster off the line than paddle shifters (i.e. those cars that use the same mechanics as a manual, but have paddles to shift rather than a gearbox, thus eliminating the need for a clutch operated by the driver), though not by much.

Seriously .. Automatic is slower than a manual.

How do you define automatic, not having a clutch?

Don't some F1 cars have a type of automatic transmission?

Very dependant on the driver. Put a noob in, I'll bet on the auto. Put a decent driver in, I'll still bet on the auto. Get a good driver and the manual will win.

sequential, probably. most cars = manual better. high powered turbos = auto

With an OK driver or better....manual....

Example....Renault Clio 1.4 16v (great example I know!).....Automatic is 0-60mph in 12.9secs while the manual is 10.5secs

OK, a nicer example....Honda Prelude 2.2 VTEC....Automatic is 0-60mph in 7.9secs while the manual is 7.1secs.

But every auto box is different, you can get basic ones....ones that have sports modes, ones that enable you to select 1,2 or driver, or modern ones that allow you to select 1,2,3 or drive.

Stock automatics vs Stock manuals = Manual is faster in the 1/4 mile.
Aftermarket (racing) automatic vs Aftermarket manual = Automatic is faster in the 1/4 mile.

Stock automatics are setup for smooth shifts... you have to either modify that auto to shift faster or replace it with one more suited for racing. Computer controlled shifts will always be faster than a human can shift. Of course some stock autos are already ready for racing... like the F1/SMG type autos.

automatics and manuals are pretty close these days(look at the fbodies, there was no difference in performance between them) And with an automatic you have the advantage of less drivetrain shock for high powered cars, and consistency. Consistency wins races.

In a turbocharged car, the automatic can be faster than the manual. Why? Because you never "let off the gas" in an automatic, which means that the turbos can stay spooled up and producing boost 100% of the time. When driving a turbo, if you lighten up on the throttle even for a split second, the wastegates must open and dump off excess boost.

in the 1/4 mile?

it's already proven Auto's are. you don't see T5/T6 or ZF-6 in the super gas series or other trailor series 1/4 mile cars (the fast one's not the one's you kiddies drive) You see names like Powerglide, 727 and C4/C6.

Stop with the "depends on the driver" crap that is a stupid argument with no weight AT ALL... produce a time slip or a 1/4 mile pic before you open your OPINIONATED cakeholes... mine are in my sig.

How bout some fast cars? 0-60 in 12 seconds? my gawd I almost run the 1/4 mile in that time in a 5300lb truck at 5800ft altitude.

It's all relative.

You'll never hit as high a top speed with an automatic as you will with a manual because the coverter will slip. Even though there's a lockup clutch in a torque converter, it will never enguage at top speed because to get to top speed you'll have the throttle wide open, and the TCC never enguages at WOT.

You MAY accelerate faster with an automatic with the right torque converter because it allows you to get into the power band instantly, and the power is "recycled" in the coverter, which can't happen when you slip the clutch off the start with a manual.

Then again, you MAY accelerate faster with a manual because there's less parasitic drag in a manual transmission.

And assuming the automatic transmission is tuned to the powerband of the engine, as all good race cars with auto's should be... the shifting will be MUCH more precise, and keep the engine in it's powerband, which isn't quite as easy to do with a manual, especially if you use the clutch and don't just bang gears.

I'm sure I could think of more comparisons and examples but I'm not really in a thinking mood.

Less parasitic drag, and no slippage like you'll get with a torque converter.

Ummm... that's got a bit more to do with the engine...

People say manual is faster cause most people drive cars that are only offered with automatic transmissions that are NOT high perofmance, so in that case the manual IS faster. But if you have an automatic that's designed for racing it will definitely be faster than any standard no matter who is driving. Period.

Stock slushbox autos = slower. So an automatic civic, integra, etc etc etc will always be slower than a standard civic or integra - but on cars that are actually SPORTS CARS or RACE cars, then the auto will almost certainly be much faster.

Therefore the whole thread/poll is stupid cause you can't ask the question that way. Bad poll. In some cases standard is faster, in some cases auto is faster. It depends on the circumstances.
