Really? I wonder if those are widespread problems. If anyone has any links to that kind of thing happening, I'd appreciate it.

I bought a replacement laser for mine, but I haven't had the ambition to do it yet. I did however open mine up and clean the lens off on the drive and it worked pretty good. I also have one of the original models, the one's with all the laser problems. I would try to fix that one and buy a dvd player instead of using the PS2.

I'm thinking maybe I'll get the slim and try to fix the old one when I go back home for Super Bowl weekend. Then I could sell the old one on FS/T, perhaps?

The *real* problem here is that I don't have the time & resources to make the necessary fixes, nor will I for about 1.5 weeks, and if I *did* manage to find the time I don't want to have to deal with this crap again sometime down the road. I've heard the new PS2s come with a 1-year warranty, which certainly helps its appeal...

d00d! Just buy the screwdriver and alcohol, and clean the lens. I had the same problem, and it works fine now.

Did you have to adjust the voltage at all?

The new PS2s have a bit of a problem with overheating. If you're interested, you can check your local stores to see if they do fan mods (obviously, it'll void the factory warranty).

I'm not big on console-modding. Plus the warranty would be one of the reasons to splurge on the new one.

I would try to fix your current one, if that doesn't work, buy the slim PS2.

Well...it's over. I tried cleaning the lens first--nothing. I then tried adjusting the lens angle--nothing. Finally, I tried adjusting the laser voltage--nothing. Looks like I'll have to buy the new one. :(

Buy an Xbox and mod it. :D

The new one doesn't even have a fan! AND I DON'T NEED A BOX!! *slap*

I call BS on the PSTwo having no fan. IIRC, it has an internal 40mm with no ventilation. Prediction, thermal failure.

And my modded Xbox beats the crap out of your lame-ass, only-supports-DVD-video PS2. :D
