Alright, my PS2 has been slowly crapping out on me for a few months now and now it's to the point where it won't read any discs at all. I've read about the lens-cleaning/voltage adjustment process online and I actually opened her up last night, but I don't have a small enough screwdriver, q-tips, rubbing alcohol, or anything to mark the current voltage settings in the dial inside with me down here, so I couldn't get to the lens.

I'm starting to think that this is going to be an ongoing hassle, since it was one of the "original" PS2s (got it for x-mas when they were first released). It has locked up on me a few times in the past, it's loud, and now this crap, so I'm really tempted to buy the new "slim" PS2. That said, I'm a cheap bastard...I could use some opinions. I *do* have about $115 left in Best Buy gift cards, which I was planning on using for games in the somewhat-near future, so at least the damage wouldn't be quite as bad.

Edit: I should add that this is also my primary DVD player, so having less noise would be nice. As would the built-in remote sensor, and progressive-scan should I get a new TV within the next few years...plus it also has the built-in network adapter.

Update 1-30-05: Well...it's over. I tried cleaning the lens first--nothing. I then tried adjusting the lens angle--nothing. Finally, I tried adjusting the laser voltage--nothing. Looks like I'll have to buy the new one. :(

games = $115

Owning an xbox instead: priceless (actually about 200)

My buddy has an xbox that I play a lot. I also have a Gamecube, if that matters at all.

I am sorry but large, handsome and PS2 don't go together.
If you had said small, geeky, I would have bought it.

But I'm neither small nor particularly geeky (despite posting here).

The supplies you need to try to save the old one shouldn't cost that much, try and see what happens. If that doesn't work then go for the new slim

Put it in the FS/FT forum or on eBay with a full explanation and see how much you can get. Probably more than you'd expect since right now a lot of places are still out of stock on the new PS2.

That's not a bad idea.

That'd probably just cause more trouble.

i had the same problem . i found out it was the wire that conects the main part to the open/ reset button. also the one that connects the optical drive to the main board. unfortunetly i could not find these wires any where. i also found out the ps2 holds an electric chare (at least mine did ) and when i opened it up.

Zap!

i then beat it with a hammer!

I need anger therapy. lol. it dose make a good story though.

How was that the problem? My PS2 boots up fine & everything, it just doesn't read any discs.

I'm not too impressed with the slim PS2s to tell you the truth. My bro got one and it overheats and causes graphic shudder A LOT. Mind you, it still works and hasn't crashed, but maybe look for an old PS2 online, perhaps someone who is ignorant of my slim warnings and wants to buy one?
