Poll: What was/is the best Super 7 motherboard?

I need an atx super7 mobo for a customer repair. The choices are:

Antec MB5987
FIC PA2013
Shuttle MB597
Tyan S1598 Trinity
DFI K6xv3+/66
Gigabyte GA-5AXR5

Thanks for the input.

Hmm, those are the choices?

I'll say the Tyan, although I have no experience with it. The Epox mvpg-m/G2/G5 and Asus P5A SS7 mobos were the best, IMO.

I'm with sandorski on this one. Epox or Asus for ss7 motherboard. The Asus P5A is nice, and the P5A-B is the same thing but AT as opposed to ATX.

Tyan S1598 gets my vote.......of course I'm a little biased, I own one 😉 Good overall board.

Yep, those are the few sad choices our main distributor has. For some reason the Asus board is no longer available.

I would go with the Gigabyte board because the ALi Aladdin V Super7 chipset is faster than the VIA MVP3.

Plus the 5AX has gone through many revisions to give it added features and stability. Gigabyte boards are cheap and stable with their only drawback being a general disdain for hardcore overclocking. But Super7 boards were usually pretty good about voltage/multiplier/bus flexibility.

Tyan S1598C2 Trinity no question. I had one of them and it was THE MOST STABLE MB I HAVE EVER OWNED! No complaints whatsoever.

I would have to say the Tyan Trinity 100AT (S1590S) for the AT form factor boards. It has 1 AGP, 4 ISA, 4 PCI, 3 DIMM, 2 SIMM, ATA-33, USB, and all the other goodies. It is the most flexible board I have ever had. It is very stable, only down side is it isn't very overclockable (but Tyan boards are known for stability, not overclocking). It also has an ATX power connector.

I currently have 2 computers running with this board. One a K6-3 450 and one a K6-2 350 @ 400. I have also built 2 other computers for other people with this board and so far, no complaints whatsoever. I also know of another person with this board. No complaints!

Just my 2 pennies + a few paperclips.

Asus P5A is one of the best motherboards I've owned (and still own!). The ALI chipset is superior (except maybe for AGP).

Stark: Both the P5A and P5A-B are currently available at Multiwave. The P5A is a rock solid Super 7 ATX and doesn't mind a little overclocking.

I'll have to say Tyan. I've never used one but I've heard very good things about them. Although I think Epox and ASUS make the best ones. 🙂

Corky, thanks for the info.

Unfortunately I have to get it from either Ingram Micro or Tech Data. TD stopped selling the Asus board for some reason.

The system in for service originally had a FIC VA-503+ that croaked. I talked the customer into upgrading the case to ATX with the new board.

i'd say out of those the tyan, i had the fic, it was decent except for a voltage issue on the agp which royally sucked, the rev . 2.1 of it is fine though

The ASUS P5-A and A-B for that matter are still made. Several stores have them and it's still on the Asus Website last time I checked. The Asus to me is overall the best SS7 board I have worked with. Also no one listed this one but I have had very good luck with an MSI 5169. 4 PCI 1 AGP and 3 ISA's and it's been very stable the last two years or more of use and has the ALI chipset. Been very happy with it. If I had to choose one from your list I would probably choose either the Gigabyte or Tyan with the edge to the Gigabyte.

While everyone else seems to have had a wonderful time with the Gigabyte GA5AX, I found myself floundering in APG hell with a R5.1,,,, Ended up going pci with my video. I found the board didn't like overclocking either. I have a pcshits board that runs better. Go Epox...

AOpen boards are good....don't get Shuttle I've got one (HOT-591P), not the fastest performing.
The MVP3 is faster than the ALI chipset when there is more than 1 MB cache.

While the Asus P5A topic has come up ... have any P5A owners here done any upgrading to their motherboard?

Specifically, are there any "upgrades" available at the ASUS website? I was there not too long ago and found some stuff that seemed like an upgrade patch or whatever but I wasn't sure and i'm chicken to be fooling around with my mobo if nothing seems to be wrong.

Thanks for any insight.

aaaaaaargh I don't know how anyone these days can bear the K6-2. pcshits, eh? I'm still wondering if I can get a cheap job outta them.

Rigoletto,

Who needs a friggin Athlon or P3 for internet browsing, email, and/or word processing? The truth is the majority of the people out there don't need that kind of power. In reality, we don't even need > ghz for the average applications used daily. A K6-2/3 system is very sufficient for the average user.

I don't get why you can't bear a K6-2 system. Sure, they may be cheap but thats great for most people. If I were to buy a system mainly for internet and email, I wouldn't want to spend > $1500 on a super fast system when a < $500 K6-2 system that would do the same job. Sure the $1500 would load things in 2 seconds or less, but for $1000 less, I wouldn't mind waiting 3 or 4 seconds more.

Quit whining about how you can't bear the K6-2 'pcshits'. For most of us, its all we need.

<< I found myself floundering in APG hell >>

I too had a HORRIBLE time with AGP video cards in the Giga-Byte. It was the worst SS7 board I used.
