EDIT: Obviously it depends on the game, so just vote for the average resolution you play at. If you play at 1024x768 in 9 out of the 10 games you regularly play, then you would vote for 1024x768.
Even on a good 17" monitor like the ones I have at work I don't see any real benefit to anything over 1024x. The detail is a little finer if you stop to take a look, but I don't play any games that allow me that kind of time.
I play at 1024x768. For some reason, if I kick it up to 1280x960, the graphics don't seem that much better. Maybe my 17" monitor sux
At 1280x960, I do notice more frame skippage than at 1024x768 though.

I play Half-Life/Counter-Strike at 800x600@32bit, 4xFSAA - OpenGL
D3D games - 1280x1024, no FSAA. Giants and Cataclysm just look better without FSAA - the text looks like crap with AA enabled.
I play at 800 x 600 for FPS games, and I play Anarchy Online ( MMORPG ) at 1024 x 768. The reason why is because you need a lot of space for windows and inventory and stuff in RPGs, and in an RPG enjoying the scenery is one of the best parts. Of course, I suck at most FPS I play cause I enjoy the environment in Counter-Strike also.
