I dont subscribe and my box is never full. But even though I'm on dialup, I do notice a slowdown in site speed.

Yeah I paid for it. 2.50 a month is worth the tech support I get here :) Add in hot deals, and its an easy choice.

Subscribed. I just couldn't stand the non-subscribed speeds.

Why else do I have DSL and Cable in the house? ;)

They can shell out the money (give up beer for a month or ramen noodles), why can't you?

Because they can afford it means there aren't others who can't? Do you not believe sheselectric, or are you just trying to humiliate her into subscribing? If she says she can't afford it, then she can't afford it. Why do you have to roll your eyes at her? Jacka$$.

I paid the first night it was offered. Anand had a great site, and I beleive in supporting it. The fact that I have full text searching, 1000 PM limit, and good speed all day and all night are nice features too.

<< Well, with the 40 subscribers, assuming that they paid $30 for the year, anand already has enough $$ to run a T1 for two months :D >>

But the forums probably aren't utilizing just a T1. And then there are the hosting, monitoring, and security concerns. For a site this big it's a good idea to have 24/365 access to the co-lo room, and also on-site support for emergencies. Since the servers are hosted off-site, it's usually better to choose a secure data center than a smaller hosting company.

There are countless more services available. A single point-of-contact, on-site maintenance/management, Service-level agreements, etc... It's not uncommon for sites and applications not much larger than AT to cost as much as $30,000/mo. Assuming only 12-month subscriptions for $30.00, a site like that would need 12,000 subscribers just to offset the hosting/bandwidth costs.

It's no wonder so many online services have started subscription services ;)

don't worry all you subscribers out there, the non-subscribers will catch up (in the poll), it just takes a bit longer for pages to load for us and for us to cast our votes ;)

Not a subscriber here.....or atleast not yet.....getting really sick of the slowness.

[scheme]slow down the nonsubscriber server until people are geting <1k transfer speeds so they are pretty much forced to subscribe[/scheme]

I put no, cuz i'm strapped for cash. i dont' think 2.50 per month is a lot which is why i prolly will be paying in the future when i have money to spare. I'm already in debt as it is and paying for most of my schooling. I think it is harder for college students (at least the ones that don't have mom and dad paying for them). and no, i don't drink beer and i rarely go out (because i'm THAT poor!). and if i stopped buying ramen what will i eat? :p but anyways, when i do spend money for frivolous things i would rather it being going towards something like going out and having fun then paying for something on the internet that i could just get for free (albeit slow). i support AT in their decision but i don't think that ifu don't pay it's so horrible. and some of us have a life outside of AT and would rather spend it on things more worthwhile.
