I'm gonna install a new OS for gaming...either WinME or Win98. I'm running 2k right now. :)

System: Cele533 @ 880
Ram: 256mb

No brainer. Win98. BTW, Win2K and Me (what you have in the poll) aren't the same thing.

Yep no brainer win98SE, anyone that tells you different needs to check into a clinic.

What happened to 98 vs. ME?:) I was going to say Me, I'm the best OS for gaming...;) Drats.

For pure gaming, Win98. But if you do even a little bit of other stuff, Win2000. Like a rock.

win2k.

I have no probs at all, and I don't have to reboot my pc after every game due to poor memory handling

I've had problems with 2k on older games, like Heretic, Hexen. Old, fun games. :p

<< Heretic, Hexen. Old, fun games >>

Did you try the OpenGL versions of each? I've also heard some group is making an enhanced version of Hexen 2 with colored lighting and perhaps higher resolutions. Should be fun to go back and play H2 again.

Yea, some of the older games DO have problems... But nothing beats the stability of Win2k. I'll never go back to the d@amn win9x series.

As JellyBaby stated, make sure you're using OpenGL for Win2000. Direct3D has some problems in Windows 2000, especially in Counterstrike. A friend of mine just purchased a CL GF2 Ultra, and he runs Win2000. Opened up Counterstrike, and the frames where a nice whack in the head. ;) I voted Win98SE, obviously, since I'm a CS junkie. :D

Win98SE / Win2000 or Whistler Beta 1 / Slackware Linux - Triple boot is the best way to go.

<< SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to play a game that requires support for the OpenGL standard (for three-dimensional graphics display) on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, the game does not run.

CAUSE
This behavior occurs because the Windows 2000 nVidia TNT2 drivers for the display adapter do not support the OpenGL standard

Don't even touch ME!! It is a POS operating system. Go with Win98SE.

Although you might want to think about a dual boot setup, if you have the hard drive space. Win 2K is solid as a rock and almost never crashes. Most modern games will run fine with it. If you install both you can use 2K all the time and 98 when you have to.

?? I thought that ME was just win98 third edition. It's only difference from 98 is the fact that it has recovery software built in, and some other small cosmetic features. Why is it a bad OS for gaming?? Seems to me you'd chose ME over 98SE for the same reason you'd chose 98SE over 98 first edition.

Someone enlighten me, for I feel stupid. :)

I would never install 98 over 2000, I'd just install it as a dual boot. It's winter, and I'm bored... :p

<< I'm still on an ol' TNT2U Not all of us are willing to get raped $500 for a GF2 Ultra. >>

so pick up a gf2mx. :) i just picked one up for a measely $124.

what's the big deal with winME? i ran it for quite some time without a single problem before moving to win98se (for better real mode dos game support). probably going to format tonight and load ME for the lan party this weekend.

i'd say winME -or- win98se for gaming. both are good and stable, and for the most part use the same drivers. *shrugs*

The RAM on your GF2 MX is the exact same memory I have on my TNT2U (probably 5.5ns or higher!), that's why. You might not care about high resolution gaming, but I sure do. I plan on buying a video card that has better memory than the video card I purchased over a year and a half ago - it just seems logical to me. ;)

What is wrong with you people!! Win98 is absolute crap. From my experiences WinMe is soooo much better. Since installing WinMe I havent even frozen up in 2 months. And ive never even gotten an illegal operation. I am a pretty hardcore gamer & all my games run perfect with no problems on WinMe.
