[POLL] What is Your Favorite Variety of Apple?

Amused

If you want to add any to the poll, let me know.

My two favorites are Braeburn and Fuji.

I like Red Delicious, but the chance of getting a mushy one is too great.

I like Golden Delicious the most, especially when they are still crisp and a little tart. Fujis are good, too. I like Washington apples, but they get mushy fast, so then all they are good for is a pie.

Yeah, Red Delicious (you call them Washington) apples do get mushy too fast. But they aren't best for baking.

I believe Granny Smith are best for baking, IIRC.

Fuji or Gala.

Voted Fuji.

I've never tried Gala. What do they taste like?

They are very crisp apples and the chance of a mushy one is very low. Very sweet, a good comparison would be the Fuji apple. They are generally a little smaller...maybe a little smaller than the average adult male fist.

Fuji apples are great for baking (as are Galas). A neat way to spice up an apple pie is to use a sweet apple (like a Fuji or Gala) and then throw in some Granny Smith for a little tartness. Mmmm...not many things better than a fresh, warm apple pie with a scoop of homemade vanilla ice cream.

Oh cool. I'll have to give them a try.

I hate trying to get good apples in the summer. The Fujis and Braeburns all look like crap. A few weeks ago they started looking great again.

But the Galas seemed to look good throughout the summer. So I'll have to give them a try.

I went home to my parents house this past weekend and went up to our family orchard (ok, we don't own it but it's the only orchard we patronize) and brought back a half-peck of Buckeye Gala apples. They are terrific. My fiancee and I have gone through half the bag already and haven't had a bad one yet. This is what is currently in season for the Ohio growing area

lol i been thinking about putting up a poll like this except i didnt know there were so many different kinds 😀

i would have gone for fuji 5 years ago, but i have acquired a taste for golden delicious now...

They taste very sweet to me.

Sweeter than Fujis?

I know Fujis have a sweet-tart taste to them. I was wondering how Galas compare.

Yes, IMO.

There is really no tart that I can taste.

Same for me. Galas seem to be always crisp and sweet. They rock.

Yeah, it's funny how your tastes change. 🙂

I used to be a big fan of Red Delicious, then the Golden Del., Granny Smith, and now the Gala (specifically the Buckeye Gala). I've only really used Fuji for baking and I usually throw a Granny Smith or 2 in with the Fujis to give the pie a little different taste.

Fuji Apples

Recent introduction from Japan that quickly became California's favorite apple. Sweet, very crisp and flavorful, excellent keeper. Dull reddish-orange skin, sometimes russeted. Ripe mid-September. Excellent pollenizer for other apple varieties. Chilling requirement apparently less than 600 hours. Self-fruitful.

Cox's Orange Pippin.
THE APPLE
Taste: Sweet and juicy
Skin Texture: Thin
Flesh: Crisp, scented and nutty
Apple size: Medium desert apple

Not very hardy and difficult to find at retail, but an amazing apple nonetheless.
