I don't know what a button-up shirt is. And I thought a button down shirt was one that has button down collars.

They're called "button downs" ... and who starts buttoning from the bottom? That is a sure way to end up with crookedly buttoned buttons. If you start at the top and "button down", you'll never button incorrectly

The buttoning thing refers to the collar, not the buttons going up/down on the shirt. The collar BUTTONS DOWN...
