Consumer Reports rates Hyundai the same or better than Honda in terms of their reliability ratings. A quote from J.D. Power and Associates in reference to the Hyundai Tucson:

"Hyundai has shown impressive quality gains, and this year is no exception. The Tucson earns an impressive score of 9 problems per 100 in its debut year. A launch vehicle with a score that outpaces the segment is a true testament to the strides Hyundai is making to be a world-class, top-quality competitor."

I've never driven nor been in any Hyundai. This is just an example of why you need to do your research.

Since American manufacturers (compaines that have their headquarters based in the USA) have manufacturing plants in Canada and Mexico, among other places, the term 'import' is ambigious now-a-days because a broad spectrum of manufacturers use parts or resources all around the globe for various reasons - price and time to market are the most pertinent of those.

Take for example the Saab 9-2x: The Saab name suggests "european" -> Saab is owned by GM, an "american" company -> who holds a stake Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. who is responsable for the Subaru brand, so this car was buit in Japan and "import"-ed. Classify that one!

My take on it: An 'American' car is one whose headquarters is based in the United States. (The big three most notably). Even though the Aussies gave us the GTO, in this rationale is an american car because it has a Pontiac badge on it - the same as saying the 9-2x is a "european" car. An 'Import' classifies any car whose headquarters for that manufacturer is or was upon founding, located in another country, even though they may have been acquired. However, I usually refer to Maserati, Lamoborghini and Pagani brands as "Italians", and Aston Martin, Jag, Citroen and VAG/VW, BMW and Mercedes, ect. as "europeans", regardless of locale like "British" cars and "French" *shudders* cars.

Have you've done your research? Please take a look at consumer reports reliability rating and majority of their cars are not that great. Please take a look at Honda and espacially Toyota and see that NONE have a WORST rating. ALL of toyota's cars are consumer reports reccommanded.

Consumer Reports rates Hyundai 5th overall just behind Toyota, not any one specific vehicle. This rating accounts for all consumer vehicles each company sells, therefore this would not be acheivable if the "majority" of their vehicles were crap. If you feel differently, perhaps you should take it up with Consumer Reports. The J.D. Power and Associates quote was to show Hyundai's strides. They've done more in the last decade in terms of safety, quality and reliabilty than any other manufacturer has acheived in their lifespan. Again, I have never been in a Hyundai or driven one and I have no reason to advocate for Hyundai or any one company, however I am impressed with their improvements. These are all facts, not opinions.

An import is an individual car that was not originally purchased/registered in your own country, hence you get it from another country and "import" it to your country.

For example all Evo VI's are imports in the UK - as Mitsubishi never officially sold it.

My friend's FTO is an import - he got it imported specifically for him from Japen.

My Prelude is a UK model - the JDM spec is an import.

Any make/model of car can be an import if it was originally bought/registered in another country - if the car was originally purchased in your country - it's not an import.

Given your so call unbias obersavtion, Hyundai has only turned around the Sonata which may i say was the least reliable car previously. There's only room to go up if you're the worst. As a car company, Hyundai has much to do to be put in the same brands as Hondas and Toyotas. Hyundai reliability ranking ranges from worst to best while Hondas and Toyotas stay pretty consistent at the top. If you want to know, my family drive Toyota, Lexus and 1 Scion. Those three are rank 1, 2, and 3 in consumer report's 2005 reliability trends. For comparisons sake, which would you rather have giving the choice?

How is Hyundai the worst? Say what you wish, but the fact is Hyundai ranked 5th for its 2005 models averaged collectively, this is not opinion. Honda, Toyota, Subaru, Ford, Chevy, etc were all measured with the same methods. Take it up with Consumer Reports, although you seem to refer to them as much as I do. You seem to keep debating specific models, not the companies as a whole. If you want to do that, fine. All car manufacturers have models that don't rate as well as others. Again, there's no bias or opinion, I'm quoting Consumer Reports. This has gone too far off the original topic, so I will choose to be mature about it and discontinue any debate or lack thereof.
