It's sad to see the cool little V8 (SHO) gone. The 2000 just looks like a minor makeover of the 96 model that has more chrome. I don't think that either the 96 or the 2000 are ugly. IMO, GM absolutly OWNS the ugly market with the newest Chevy cars and small trucks (not full size trucks), and anything Pontiac <cough>AZ-TEK</cough>.
I don't think (opinion) there's a decent American sport sedan out there. OTOH, I can't afford a new car yet, so I'll keep my 92 Maxima SE (yes, it's a 5 speed!) for as long as I can keep the rust away.

In reference to the Aztec, this "Letter to the Editor" in R&T had me rolling for quite some time :)

"Who says GM doesn?t have a sense of humor? What a bunch of kidders! But trying to get us rubes to actually believe that the hideous Pontiac Aztek test mule shown in your July issue is a production car is a bit over the top. C?mon, guys. Quit fooling around and show us the real thing."

the '00 taurus is what the 96' design should have been. it's not the best looking, but it's not ugly. on the other hand, it does look much nicer than camry/accord.

and for the record, the 92'-95' sho's aren't as bad as you think...:)

I like the changes to the Taurus, expecccially the new grill opening, the longer sleaker look, and the rear light area. The older style was a very ughly looking car, very lumby looking with no style anywhere .

Doesn't beat my new Pontiac Grand Prix for looks however.

Yeh that Taurus looks ok, but I think its a bit big for a FWD car, both in weight (icluding weight distribution) & engine size.

IMAO FWD doesnt really suite anything bigger than a V6 Camry. Considering the size of the Taurus a RWD Ford Falcon is the go. That is if has to be a Ford.

"America needs a good sports sedan...and surely you don't think the Pontiac Bonneville is doing anything for the U.S' image as a serious sports sedan maker"

Is this what you had in mind Supergroove? -

The Holden SS, complete with a 225KW (about 300BHP OR about 330 HP SAE) GenIII alloy Chev V8 engine for about US$25000.

Even better would be the Holden GTS, Which is built by 'Holden Special Vehicles (Which is run by 'Tom Walkinshaw Racing' the people behind the Arrows F1 team) & has a 300KW (about 400BHP or 440HP SAE) Calloway Chevy engine. I couldn't find the price on this one.

Again, not available in the US. My definition of American Sports Sedan = Lincoln LS V6 w/5-speed

No its completelly different but they both evolved from the long wheelbase version of the Opel Rekord of about 20 or more years ago. The Holden has a longer/wider wheelbase & a Macpherson strut/rack 'n pinion front end (the Opel has a steering box setup) & a basically modified Opel IRS trailing arm suspension, with a couple of extra links thrown in, so they can call it multi-link.

Also the Opels only come with 4 or 6 in-line engines of no more than 3 litres (or is it a V6), while the Holden come with a 3.8 Buick V6, or the Supercharged 3.8 Buick V6, or the Holden 5 litre 304ci V8 (basically an old Holden 308 V8 reduced to 304ci so it can qualify within the 'Group A' spec, but only the Pickup version is now avaliable with the Holden V8) & the new 5.7 litre GenIII alloy chev 350 & of-course the 300KW Calloway version.
