Just curious, with doctors saying that we're eating to much food, that our food is too high in <insert everything bad here>, and that we get very, very little exercise, do you think that PE in schools is good?

I do. I think you should have it every year. Get the kids used to regular exercise.

Please, vote and discuss.

This is how it was in Maine and it was perfect.

It was required for freshmen to take for half the year. Then they had to take 1 more half year gym class. Anytime they wanted before they graduated. and it was easy as balls. Showing up got you a B+ moving got you an A
we got credit for it also

in NY its mandatory for all 4 years and you dont get credit for it.

Getting less and less here in the uk, which is a shame. I loved PE, i know some didn't, but you can see the benefits of it.

No matter what school the male gym teachers always wore tight shorts that should be illegal.

I'm convinced that 90% of gym teachers are gay, the other 10% are members of NAMBLA.

Thou gym was cool in grade school cause we got to play dodge ball, football, and other physical activities. Nowadays games and sports like that aren't allowed cause it hurts the losers feelings. There are two types of people in this world, winners and losers, and it all starts in grade school PE class.

Agreed.

Too many fat unfit kids in school. You will more often then not get a fat kid be fit in school.

PE is great. I loved it. But the problem is that it works both ways. Especially in the team games. If your good you are picked first and if your not as good you are picked last. This can be demoralising for some of the kids. Team games also the not so good people participate less in also. They *can't be bothered*. Same with A LOT of the girls at my school. Some just didn't want to do it or work up a sweat and some would really be in to it. This will *probably* be true at most schools.

We did 2hrs of PE at when I was in school. Thats not enough though but then you do have 10 subjects you concentrate on also. Our school basically had one sporting event on every day after school. More often then not it had about 2 or 3 things for you to do. I was a happy kid:D

I think school PE should have more solo sports. Wrestling, Tennis, Olympic Weight Lifting :D etc.

In the end the school can't force lazy kids to make much of an effort in PE though. The kids will only get out what they put in.

I loved PE. From the ages of 12-16 I did at least about 10hrs of after school activities and played Football or Rugby on Sunday. That got me more interested and I joined other clubs in my area. Then I got in to Olympic WeightLifting.

In high school it should be mandatory (for 2 or maybe 3 years). College? Hell no.

People need to exercise at least 3 times a week.

I used to hate it and think it a waste of time but it does expose kids to certain sports that many will take up over longer term. Also given that childhood obesity numbers are sky rocketing it's better than nothing.

I am not of the belief that PE will have a major impact on decreasing obesity however. The reason being if a kid is doing this 3 times a week for 30 min of half assed running around it's never going to make up for the sh*t so many parents shovel down their children's throats. Really eating is the reason kids are getting to be fat little whales as opposed to a slightly decreased level of excercise. At least that would be my guess. Still PE is probably beneficial.

Nah. I was just thinking about living in Louisiana. That was the only place I ever had PE.

We did stuff like tennis, baseball, basketball, football, archery, and if we made the teacher mad enough, running around the football field with ankle weights. :)

I think it needs to start with kids because it's almost impossible to get adults to change their ways. As for kids who don't try, fail them. If you try and just suck at it, then you shouldn't get a bad grade. At least you tried.

Also, don't get me started on hurting the feelings of losers. You have to be competative in life, unless you want to be a loser.

School is a place to learn. You don't learn much throwing a ball around.

Excercise should be after school with friends to have fun. Its up to the parents to make the kids get some air and run around, not the school.

Edit: When I was attending highschool PE was manditory for the 5 years of high school. Twice a week, for 50min periods.

You learn how to take care of yourself. A kid with two parents who eat butter and mayonaise sandwhiches and watch the Home Shopping Network all day isn't going to get any exercise outside of school.

Fit kids make fit adults, which in turn make fit kids. Lazy kids make lazy adults, which in turn make lazy kids.

A lazy kid won't make a lazy adult if he or she has the brains not to. When you're an adult you make your own decisions and you decided weather or not you want to live a healthy active life, and if you choose not to, you?re an idiot to do so. It's not what you parents or your school made you or didn't make you do when you were younger. Because and adult should be responsible enough to know what he/she should or shouldn't do in terms of health.

PE is stupid if it's forced to you at college.

But look at obesity and excercise rates among adults. You really think they're going to do things with their kids? Most parents just don't have an interest in getting off the couch, so school is probably the only way kids will start in a lot of cases.

I agree. But look at all the adults who fail this test? Most in fact. And when you have an active kid who loves to do things they are more likely, when they're an adult, to continue that. It's the adult's choice but the right choice will be easier to make if they're used to excercise.

So you're saying that the effect of the parent's lifestyle on the child is that small? I'm like my dad in quite a few ways. I do a lot of the same things he does.

Don't take my word for it though. Look at fat couples. They have fat kids. Look at fit couples. They have fit kids. How much of that can be attributed only to genetics?

It's a statistical certainty that less active fatter parents are more likely to have less active fatter kids and like you say it's not all genetics. Adults, ideally, can do anything they want. But in a world where many lack the determination or willpower to excercise I think giving them some added motivation (having been used to it since early years) is going to help them.

The problem with PE where I live is that if you don't have it by 10AM, you are likely to get HEATSTROKE. Yes, I fainted many times in school growing up. I remember passing out standing by the water fountain... 90 degree heat and 90% humidity is downright DANGEROUS. Why they make little kids run laps in these conditions is beyond me.

Another problem is that they don't take different body-types/abilities into consideration. For example, I am great at sports that require strength, balance, and endurance, but I have really BAD hand-eye coordination and nothing can really change that (I have strabismus, a vision condition). It is VERY discouraging to get a bad grade for something you can't do much about and not be graded based on the effort you put in/progress you make/what you ARE good at.

Anyway, I am reasonably physically fit, come from a family of physically fit/athletic people, and am raising my children to be health conscious. I also work for the school system. And I think the system could use a LOT of improvement, especially in my state. If anything, the PE classes I took down here almost made me hate sports!
