POLL: What do you consider tailgaiting?

why do you care unless they actually hit you ? It actually helps your gas mileage. Welcome it.

I voted headlights.

I don't really care if people tailgate me, they may think it pisses me off, but they're the one thats gonna be paying to fix my bumper if they hit me😀

I use the 1 second rule to determine if I am being tailgaited. If I pass something and they pass it in less than 1 second, then they are tailgaiting me.

Wife was hit from behind when she stopped at a normal deceleration rate at a stop light - so tailgaiting does bother us.

I think tailgating is technically when a car is within 2 seconds of you or something like that.

But, I answered the first option since that's the only time I get annoyed.

Gee, marginally better gas mileage at freeway speeds vs. getting rear-ended by the asshat if you have to hit the breaks unexpectly???
Let me think...

That money won't fix your neck/back. If it was just plastic and metal at stake, I might not care.

On regular city roads, generally if my rear spoiler blocks your headlights (this rule doesn't work on taller cars of course) you are doing pretty well. If I can see your lights underneath the spoiler you are too close.

On high speed roads, very few people follow "safely," but but if they did, I should probably be able to see their headlights above the spoiler.

tailgating sucks, i make sure i always follow at least 2 seconds behind. its what they teach you in driving school.

supposed to be 1 second for every 10 miles an hour IIRC

1 second is not enough time. After being hit from behind I try an make sure there is at least 2-3 car lengths between me and the car behind me. If they get too close I give them the brake lights until they back off.

I know that my definition is out of whack. I'm sure I'm worse than I think. But, that is because I have a younger brother who thinks that a couple of feet between him and the car in front of him is okay. I've left some permanent imprints in his dash from being scared that I was gonna die! :Q

If I can see beyond the front car (the car ahead of them) I follow much closer because I just want them to get out of my way (left lane). If I can't see (SUV/truck) then I follow 1 car length at least.

Depends on speed, but if they're within a car length at highway they may have to watch out for my brake lights suddenly going on.

The best thing to do when someone is tailgating is to just let off the gas and slow down gradually. It works really well and pisses them off. As soon as you see the tailgater start to go around you speed up nice and quick and block them. I get much enjoyment out of this technique.

If someone begin to obnoxiously tailgate me, meaning they are tailgating me when they could otherwise pass OR if I have no control over my speed due to someone else being in front of me, then I usually just slow down a little. It always ends up with them further back than before. 😛

And no, I don't slam my brakes and go from 60 to 20 in .5 seconds or anything. I'm talking maybe a 1/10 reduction in speed.

Personally, I think tailgating is when you goto a stadium early and cook up some burgers, dogs, ribs, chicken, and drink beers. But I'll go with #3.

Passengers always think that. It's different if you have the brakes at your feet. You're thinking... there's no reason for them to brake because I can see what's in front of them. If the car brakes anyway, it's because they wanted to teach you a lesson... and that doesn't ACTUALLY happen 99% of the time... even in NY.

When I look in my rearview mirror and I can see a small piece of lettuce stuck in the lady's teeth in the car behind me.....well then I'd say she's a little too close.

im a fan of the gradual slowdown method myself.
just to piss them off more, or at least i hope it does.

i worked with a guy who would shift down into 2nd gear so the car slows down sort of quick w/o brake lights.

i voted 'cant see the road'
