getting the need for a laptop. what would you recommend based on reliability, customer support, battery life and speed, in that order?

Get a Dell, over the Net. Spend the extra money and get the extended service policy. If it breaks, and they do, you will be glad you spent the $$. R
 
IBM is pretty good - IBM notebooks are well designed and the tech support is top notch. Dell notebooks have lots of features, but the build quality on the Inspirons is only so-so and the keyboards are terrible!
 
I know several people who have Compaq's that work great, Dell I'm hesitant about buying from them since they refuse to sell AMD..
 
i will probably get a r series ibm, the weight isn't a problem and i would rather have a 15" screen. thanks for all the input 🙂
